Every year the second week in April is designated as National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week and a chance for the public at large to truly see and understand what public safety telecommunicators do each day. We are the first point of contact with public safety during a crisis and the unseen anchor in moments of chaos.

NPSTW is our time to celebrate and acknowledge the complexities of this job. I want to encourage each of you to recognize the work you do and the work of your colleagues. This is critical every single day of the year, but especially during NPSTW. Take the time to acknowledge yourselves for being a calm, steady presence amid chaos. Every day you accept a role that demands dedication, intelligence, discipline, empathy and endurance. In a system built on response, telecommunicators are the foundation, so let’s celebrate that.

As Christian Shelby 911 Director, I want to thank our TCs, full time, part time, and trainees: Fisher, HJackson, Chrispen, Thompson, Williams, Ping, Millan, Wood, Harter, BJackson, Fagust, Lomprez, Roe, Rodden, and Woods. No matter what stage you are at in this career, you are essential. I celebrate you all, especially this week, for the dedication among the challenges to continue in this profession.

I also want to express appreciation to dispatchers at Taylorville Police Dept, Pana Police Dept, Shelby County Sheriff's Office, the local agencies of the 2 counties we dispatch for. And to all agencies and dispatchers everywhere.......Thank You!

Recognizing 20 years of service as a 911 dispatcher involves celebrating two decades of unwavering dedication, compassion, and reliability as the "first first responder". A 20-year milestone signifies a profound impact on the community, often acting as a steady, compassionate, and reliable voice during people's most critical moments.
Christian Shelby 911 would like to congratulate Mykal Fisher for 20 years behind the headset. She began her career at Christian County Sheriff's Office as a full time dispatcher on February 1st, 2006. For two decades, YOU have been that steady voice on the other end of the line.
And we want to thank you for your service!

🚨 FUN FACT: The very first 9-1-1 call ever made! 🚨

đź“… February 16, 1968
đź“Ť Haleyville, Alabama

The first official 9-1-1 call wasn’t an emergency at all!
It was placed by Alabama Speaker of the House Rankin Fite and answered by U.S. Congressman Tom Bevill—just to prove the system worked.

✨ A few cool facts:
• The call happened less than 1 year after 9-1-1 was chosen as the emergency number
• It was answered by a local police dispatcher
• Alabama beat the rest of the country to the punch
• Today, millions of life-saving calls are answered every year thanks to that moment

📞 From one simple test call to saving lives every single day—this is why dispatchers matter.
Behind every ring is a calm voice, a quick mind, and someone ready to help.

đź’› Thank a dispatcher today.
