Can AI make art? Should it? What happens to human artists and human audiences when algorithms influence the way art is conceived and consumed? Join acclaimed songwriter and performer Emily Scott Robinson and novelist and former AI ethics insider Jenny Williams for a deep discussion of the impacts AI is already having on creative practice, labor, and industries, along with impassioned hopes for the future—interspersed with songs and readings from these two artists’ body of work (100% human-made). Join us this Monday, October 19th at 5:30pm in the Telluride Library Program Room for an unforgettable performance by these two amazing women.

Jenny Williams is the author of House of Liars, a new literary psychological thriller about AI, creativity, and motherhood, as well as the novel The Atlas of Forgotten Places (St. Martin’s Press) and the novella A Short Future History of Whales (Spotify Audiobook Selects). She spent eight and a half years at Google and Microsoft working on AI ethics, content design, and research on creativity and AI. A former Ridgway resident, she currently works as a researcher and writer in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Emily Scott Robinson is an internationally-touring singer and songwriter signed to John Prine’s label Oh Boy Records. Lauded by NPR, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Colorado Public Radio, and the Washington Post, Robinson recently released her fifth album Appalachia to critical acclaim and six weeks at the #1 spot on the Folk radio charts. “Colorado singer-songwriter Emily Scott Robinson mixes folk and country with gorgeous, clear-eyed examinations of faith, hope and regret.” - NPR

Join us for a talk and signing on Monday, October 26th at 5:30 pm with Pam L. Houston about her new book, Animals Taught Me Everything!

What can a wagging tail and soaring wings teach us about a life well lived?

From Icelandic mares and Irish wolfhounds to elephants, leopards, hyenas, and a desert-adapted lioness named Charlie, Pam Houston has learned life’s most important lessons from animals. How to play. How to rest. How to love. How to die. How to be present with the dying. How to be present with the living and with the Earth. How to find joy in the least likely places. How to find joy, literally, everywhere. With playful sincerity, Houston finds power and promise in the teachings of our fellow creatures and reminds us that animals are here for us, every day and everywhere.

Why do humans need ghosts? And what do ghosts have to teach us?

Join us for an author talk and signing with Betsy Gaines Quammen for her new book, THIS HAUNTED LAND: Reckoning with Ghosts and the Stories that Shape America at 4:00. This event is part of the Original Thinkers , but it is free and open to the public, as are all OT events held at the library. No pass needed.

This Haunted Land investigates some of America’s most enduring legends and uncovers how ghost stories can illuminate some of the most unsettling parts of history. With curiosity, a touch of skepticism, and an open-hearted willingness to learn from the living and the dead, Betsy Gaines Quammen takes readers on a journey into haunted towns, forgotten lives, and abandoned places.
