đźš‘ Our communities have changed. Has our EMS system kept pace?

For decades, San Luis Obispo County has operated without a comprehensive countywide competitive review of ambulance services. During that time, our communities have grown, technology has advanced, and the way emergency medical services are delivered has evolved.
The current Request for Proposals (RFP) process gives us an important opportunity to ask: Can we improve the system?
Competition allows us to evaluate new technology, ambulance deployment strategies, patient care, response performance, and overall value for our communities.
📞 Why should this matter to you? When you call 911, you're relying on an entire emergency medical system—not just an ambulance. How that system is designed, coordinated, and managed can directly affect the care you and your family receive.
This isn't about criticizing the dedicated EMTs and paramedics who serve our communities. It's about making sure the system supporting them continues to improve.
This RFP process simply creates an opportunity to determine whether improvements can be made.

What happens after you call 9-1-1 matters.

📞 Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) helps determine how serious a medical emergency is and matches the response to the patient’s needs.
Why does that matter to you? It helps get the right resources to serious emergencies while keeping ambulances and first responders available for other 9-1-1 calls.
A 2025 independent assessment found that 80.5% of medical calls were being treated as emergency responses, yet only 9.6% of those patients were ultimately transported with lights and sirens. The assessment concluded this creates unnecessary risk and recommended implementing a modern EMD system.
đź’° Today, local cities pay for County dispatch services, while the ambulance provider does not directly contribute to those dispatch costs.
The Partnership Plan: Modernize EMD and fund the upgraded dispatch system.

What does “Modernizing EMS” actually mean?
The Central Coast EMS Partnership is proposing several changes to how emergency ambulance services operate in our communities.
Under the current EMS system:
đźš‘ Ambulances are typically assigned to fixed locations until dispatched. Modern EMS systems can use call data, demand patterns, and real-time availability to help position ambulances where they are most likely to be needed.
🏥 9-1-1 ambulances are often used for interfacility hospital transfers. When units are committed to these transfers, fewer ambulances are available for 9-1-1 emergencies.
📞 San Luis Obispo County currently operates without an Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) system. EMD helps determine the severity of a medical call and match the 9-1-1 response to the patient's needs.
The Partnership Plan: Use data-driven ambulance deployment, improve resource availability for 9-1-1 emergencies, and implement Emergency Medical Dispatch.
These changes are designed to create a more efficient, responsive, and reliable 9-1-1 EMS system.

Fire safety isn't just a set of rules, it's a daily commitment to protecting the people you love.
This Fire Prevention Week (October 4–10, 2026) protect your household by mastering these essential safety pillars:

1. FIRE PREVENTION & SAFETY
• Smoke Detectors: Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside every bedroom, and outside sleeping areas. Test them monthly and replace the batteries annually. Replace smoke detector units every ten years.
• Fire Extinguishers: Keep a certified fire extinguisher in accessible areas like the kitchen and garage. Remember the P.A.S.S. method: Pull the pin, aim low, squeeze the lever, and sweep from side to side.
• Lithium-Ion Battery Safety: Always charge smartphones, laptops, and e-bikes on hard, flat surfaces that dissipate heat and avoid soft surfaces like beds or couches. Use only the original or certified charging equipment and unplug devices as soon as they reach 100%. Stop using any battery that swells, feels excessively hot, or smells strange.

2. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
• Emergency Plans: Create a fire escape plan with your family. Draw a map of your home showing two ways out of every room.
• Designate a Meeting Place: Choose a fixed safe spot where everyone will gather after escaping.

3. ACTIONS DURING AN EMERGENCY
• Get Out, Stay Out: If a fire starts, “Get Low & Go” and prioritize escaping immediately. Never go back inside for clothes, electronics, or pets.
• Call 911: Once you are safely outside at your designated meeting spot, immediately call 911 to report the emergency. Let the dispatchers and arriving first responders handle the situation.
Safety starts with small, proactive choices. Take ten minutes today to check your alarms and review your exit strategy.

Templeton Fire’s new badge design!

Templeton Fire and Emergency Services is proud to introduce a newly redesigned department badge, created to honor our department history and the events that have shaped our community and our members.

The new badge design was inspired by the Feed & Grain fire on July 4th, 2025, an incident that became a significant moment in the history of Templeton Fire and the community. The imagery incorporated into the badge represents that piece of Templeton’s history and creates a lasting connection between the department and the community we serve.

The redesign also brings together elements already featured through the department, including our uniform patches and apparatus door decals, creating a consistent identity and a visual reminder of the history behind our organization.

Another addition to the redesign is each badge is individually numbered and assigned to each full time employee. The number follows the order in which full time firefighters have joined Templeton Fire and Emergency Services. This crates a unique identifier for each member while also preserving a record for the departments full time history for generations to come.

With this redesign, we are carrying forward a piece of Templeton’s history while recognizing the men and woman who continue to serve it.

Today we honor the 2,977 lives lost on September 11th, 2001, and remember the courage and sacrifice of the firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, and civilians who answered the call that day.

We especially remember the 343 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice while responding to the attacks on the World Trade Center. Their bravery, selflessness, and commitment to protecting others continue to inspire the fire service today.

From all of us at Templeton Fire, we pause to remember those who were lost, honor those who served, and stand with the families and communities forever changed that day.
