New on the EmergiFire blog: the specialized incidents costing Texas fire departments money — and how to stop leaving it on the table.
A commercial barn fire. An EV incident in a fleet parking lot. An oil field emergency in West Texas.
Three very different calls. One thing in common: a commercial insurer with a policy that may cover your department's response costs — personnel time, equipment, suppression materials, and more.
Most Texas fire departments are responding to exactly these kinds of incidents and absorbing every dollar of the cost. Not because the money isn't there. Because no one told them to ask for it.
That changes now.
Read the full post to learn which incidents qualify, how the billing works, and why your residents are not on the hook.

Your fire department responded to an electric vehicle fire. Three hours on scene. Specialized suppression materials. Bunker gear that can't go back into service. Who pays for that?
Most departments absorb those costs. They don't have to. EV manufacturers carry insurance policies that can cover fire suppression costs when their vehicles are involved in an incident.
Our companies have been recovering those dollars on behalf of Texas fire and EMS departments for years, from commercial insurers, fleet policies, and vehicle manufacturers. Residents are never billed. Departments get reimbursed for resources they actually spent.
As EV incidents increase across Texas, the departments that know how to capture these costs will be the ones protecting both their communities and their budgets.

Everyone is talking about AI. Here's what that means for your reimbursement.
AI can process a claim in seconds. It cannot read a patient care report and know what the paramedic meant, what the payer requires, and what's missing from the documentation — all at the same time.
That gap costs agencies reimbursement they're owed.
Here's what we think EMS leaders should be asking their billing partners right now: https://emergicon.com/blog/ai-in-ems-billing-still-needs-a-human/

Most EMS billing companies manage claims. EMERGICON engineers them.
There's an important question EMS leaders should always ask when evaluating a billing partner: Does the vendor actually own and protect its technology or are they using generic systems and processes from others?
After nearly two decades building proprietary systems for Texas EMS providers, EMERGICON can answer that question with a patent portfolio. From ePCR collection and pre-billing through payment posting, AR management, and patient communications, virtually every stage of our billing lifecycle has been developed, refined, and protected through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
As our founder and CEO Christopher Turner puts it: "Our patents are legal recognition that our methods are novel, useful, and non-obvious. No one else is doing what we do the way we do it."
For EMS leaders, that translates directly to outcomes — defensible projections, consistent results, and a process that doesn't depend on the skill level of any one account rep.
We've published a full breakdown of what our patented technology covers and what it means for your agency here: https://emergicon.com/blog/ems-claims-billing-patented-technology/
