Today we remember the lives lost in the Texas City disaster, which occurred 77 years ago today when the vessel SS Grandcamp, that was docked in the Texas City port carrying ammonium nitrate, detonated after catching fire. Officials estimate 5,000 people were injured and 567 people were killed, making it the deadliest industrial accident in U.S. history.
Among those killed were members of the Texas City Volunteer Fire Department who lost 27 of the 28 members and the Texas City Heights Volunteer Fire Department who lost 3 of 4 members.
"Texas City is a community with many dead, but Texas City is not a dead city. Her suffering has been agonizing, but her courage has not failed her. On this basis she will rise from the devastation which fate visited on her."
