The Bronx deserves an economy that works for the people who live here.
In a new Bronx Times op-ed, Our Bronx Executive Director Sandra Lobo and Bronx Economic Development Corporation President Winston Peters make the case for a new vision of economic development, one rooted in community ownership, shared prosperity, and opportunities for Bronx residents to build wealth and shape their own future.
The op-ed highlights the Bronx Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS), a community-driven roadmap that reflects years of organizing, planning, and collaboration across sectors. It challenges us to think beyond growth for growth's sake and focus on creating an economy where working families, small businesses, and local communities can thrive.
This conversation continues at the Bronx Economic Development Summit on June 5-6, where local and national leaders will explore innovative approaches to community wealth building, employee ownership, impact investing, equitable real estate development, and more.
Join us as we work to build an economy that works for the Bronx.

This morning, Our Bronx proudly stood with tenants from Robert Fulton Terrace and Fordham Towers, Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) Commissioner Dina Levy, Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants Director Cea Weaver, Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, Council Member Althea Stevens, and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams to announce a historic $31 million judgment against building owners in the Bronx—the largest ever in HPD history.
Our Bronx has long organized with the tenants of 480 East 188th St to hold landlords Karan Singh and Rajmattie Persaud accountable for gross neglect of their buildings, which has included a broken elevator, persistent harassment, lack of repairs, and over 500 open violations. As a part of the court judgement, the City also secured the appointment of an independent Chief Restructuring Officer, who will oversee the use of more than $900,000 in penalties for immediate critical repairs.
Our Bronx Executive Director Sandra Lobo offered this statement: “For years, tenants at Robert Fulton Terrace and Fordham Towers have organized with Our Bronx to document dangerous conditions, build tenant leadership, and demand the safe, stable homes they deserve. Today’s record penalty is a powerful reminder that when tenants are organized, their experiences cannot be dismissed and negligent ownership can be held accountable. We thank Mayor Mamdani, HPD, and the Anti-Harassment Unit for holding these landlords accountable, and urge Fannie Mae to work with HPD and tenants to secure a responsible preservation buyer who will repair these buildings, keep them affordable, and respect the leadership of the residents who have fought to protect their homes.”
We continue to stand with tenants in calling for long-term solutions to landlord neglect, including the passage of the Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act (T**A) and the Community Opportunity to Purchase Act (COPA), so distressed buildings can be transitioned to responsible tenant and community ownership, ending predatory practices and stabilizing their homes for the long haul.
