🔥 WHY DO WE ISSUE FIRE DANGER WARNINGS? 🔥

When the National Weather Service warns of high fire danger, it's not just about the weather. It's about how quickly a small fire can become a big problem.

What creates high fire danger?

- Low humidity: Dries out vegetation, making grass, leaves, and pine straw easier to ignite.
- Dry fuels: Give fires plenty of material to burn and spread.
- Wind: Can push flames forward and carry embers into new areas.

Why does this matter?

A small fire can spread quickly under the right conditions, threatening homes, property, and nearby woods. Even when winds are light, very low humidity and dry vegetation can increase fire risk.

When fire danger warnings are issued:

- Check local burn restrictions and permitting requirements.
- Avoid outdoor burning when conditions are dangerous.
- Never leave a fire unattended.
- Properly dispose of ci******es and other smoking materials.

These warnings are meant to help you understand the risk and take precautions before a fire starts.

A little prevention goes a long way. Help us keep our community safe!

🔥 HIGH FIRE DANGER TODAY 🔥

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a Special Weather Statement for parts of north and central Georgia, including our area, due to high fire danger conditions this afternoon and evening.

🌬️ Expected Conditions:

- Relative humidity of 30% or less for 4 or more hours.
- Northeast winds of 10–15 mph, with gusts reaching 20–25 mph.
- Dry vegetation and other fuels that could allow fires to spread quickly.

⚠️ Fire Safety Reminders:

- Check local burn restrictions and permitting requirements before burning outdoors.
- Never leave a fire unattended.
- Keep water and firefighting tools nearby if outdoor burning is permitted.
- Properly dispose of ci******es and other smoking materials.

Dry conditions combined with gusty winds can cause fires to spread rapidly and become difficult to control.

Please use extra caution today!

Forecasters are looking at very windy conditions to develop Saturday. If you had to choose a side of a hurricane landfall, it would be on its west, as its east side carries the higher threat of severe weather once it makes landfall. Georgia is on the east side of Isaias. We'll get lots of rain, coming in bands, and some gusty winds. Let's hope that rainfall will be beneficial, but the storm loses its strength very quickly.

NWS ATL update: Hurricane Isaias has formed over the western Gulf. It is forecast to move north and east over the coming days. Confidence and concern are increasing regarding the wind threat this weekend. Continue to monitor future forecast updates.

Today, Thurston Fire Department pauses to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to honor the first responders who ran toward danger while others were running to safety.

We remember the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, military members, and civilians whose lives were lost that day and in the years that followed.

For those of us in the fire service, September 11 is a reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and brotherhood that come with answering the call.

We will never forget. ❤️

Over the first six months of the year, Thurston Fire Department has responded to roughly 140 calls for service. While those numbers reflect the work we've done, our goal isn't to see more calls—it's to see fewer. The greatest success is a community that is safe, healthy, and doesn't need us.

That's why we train. This month, our members continued to invest in advanced training, including firefighter search and rescue training and airbag release training for motor vehicle accidents. We also did a CPR training and water rescue training for the life guards at the local pool. We prepare for every type of emergency with one hope: that we never have to use those skills—but if the day comes, we're ready.

Thank you to our firefighters, EMS personnel, Air Life crews, 911 dispatchers, and our neighboring volunteer fire departments for your continued partnership and dedication. Together, we're committed to protecting our community, day and night, rain or shine. 🚒🚑📞💙
