I spoke to a rep for The Texas Department of Wildlife and Game this morning to report the fact at Thorndale PD has had to put down four rabid racoons in less than a month. I was advised that there has been an increase in reported rabies cases for our area. RACCOONS are number one on the list as for as wildlife species. BATS the leading source of human infections in North America.
If you live in the City of Thorndale and see a racoon or other species you think is infected with rabies, call 9-1-1 and let the police department address the animal. Rabies is a deadly decease and should be taken seriously. The police department will put down the animal if rabid and will use the necessary precautions upon handling the animal and disposing of it.
STRAY DOGS are another major risk factor. Stray dogs are not usually vaccinated and even though it is not showing signs of rabies at the time it could be carrying the virus. Therefore, call 9-1-1 if you have a stray dog hanging around.
If we are unable to catch the dog, we trying to gain the dogs trust by feeding & giving it water. PLEASE LET THE POLICE DEPARTMENT FEED THE ANIMAL. WE are the ones that need to gain the animal's trust. We do NOT want the public trying to capture animals for us even though we appreciate you trying to help. It's about public safety.
Respectfully
Scott Roberson - Chief of Police
