Today at approximately 2pm Mayking Fire Department answered a county wide call for mutual aid for tanker and man power support in regards to a single story residential fire, that had spread to several vehicles, 2 nearby garages, and several propane tanks. We along Kingscreek, Sandlick, Whitesburg, and Jenkins Fire Department worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control.

We would like to thank the Whitesburg Masonic Lodge #754 for graciously preparing and providing us with a hot dog snack after the fire was wrapped up.

We’d like to keep the families in our thoughts and prayers.

At approximately 10:20 AM this morning, the Mayking Fire Department was dispatched to the Golden Rod Drive area of Thornton for a possible structure fire.

Mayking Fire Department arrived on scene within minutes to find an abandoned structure fully involved in fire, with the fire having spread to an adjacent occupied single-story residence.

Mid-day fires during the work week can be extremely challenging for a fully volunteer fire department. Mayking Fire Department requested mutual aid from Whitesburg Fire Department and Jenkins Fire Department for additional manpower and water supply.

Thanks to the quick response and teamwork of all three departments, crews were able to quickly knock down the fire spread to the occupied residence and extinguish the abandoned structure.

Unfortunately, the abandoned structure was a total loss. However, the occupied residence was successfully saved, sustaining only minimal damage.

Mayking Fire Department would like to extend our sincere thanks and gratitude to the members of Whitesburg Fire Department and Jenkins Fire Department. Their assistance was invaluable, and without their help, the outcome could have potentially been much different.

This incident is another reminder of how important mutual aid and volunteer firefighters are to our communities.

We would also like to extend an invitation to anyone who has ever considered serving their community by joining their local fire department. Please reach out and get involved. All of the fire departments across Letcher County could definitely use the help.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support our volunteer firefighters and the communities we serve. 🚒

We would like to give a shoutout to our our new firefighter Joseph Sexton along with Junior Firefighters Harley Boggs, Mason Absher, and Jordan Potter for taking fire fundamentals 1 & 2. This give them the skills needed to get into fire fighting. Thank you young men for giving up your weekend to learn.

‼️⚠️ATTENTION⚠️‼️
Highway 805 near Martha Jane Potter is clear but congested. The logs where heavy so we could only move them to the ditch without having heavy equipment. There is still a low hanging line and debris on the edge of the roadway. Please slow down, stay off your phone, and be aware. There are cones out to mark the debris. The state highway department has 10-12 trees across roadways in Letcher County so be patient with the clean-up process. They will return to clear the debris after AEP gets the tree from the main power line.
