Extraordinary teachers inspire kids to do extraordinary things. Christy Warner, a teacher at Weathersfield Elementary and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Thousand Oaks, brought her “K-Kids” to the City Council to show how they “spread kindness, help neighbors in need, and make our community a better place.”

Among the K-Kids’ activities: Selling “kindnessgrams” to raise funds for the Shelter Hope Pet Shop; organizing a schoolwide food drive for the Manna of Conejo Valley food bank; and visiting veterans at the Veterans Home of California-Ventura. The K-Kids even delivered a “kindnessgram” to the City Council. I’m so glad the Council was able to hear from Ms. Warner’s K-Kids, and commend their good deeds.

Last night's City Council meeting focused on preparations for this winter's El Niño event, forecast to be the largest in decades.

The presentations covered preparedness and response handled by the county Office of Emergency Services (OES), the lead agency in response to flooding, wildfires, earthquakes, and other emergencies. OES runs the VC Alert system and the vcemergency.com website that provide residents with real-time official updates; it also coordinates responses regionally among all local governments, including the City of Thousand Oaks.

Staff also spoke about city measures, especially by the Public Works Department, that occur before, during, and after any storm. Public Works also offers free pre-filled sandbags at the Municipal Service Center, 1993 Rancho Conejo Blvd.

Most important of all, Council and the public also heard about preparation measures residents can take ahead of heavy rain and other emergencies.

With this weekend's rains likely to be the start of a very wet winter season, last night's meeting was a timely reminder of what we must do so that the county, the city, and residents can be prepared and stay safe.

Congratulations to the Conejo Free Clinic on 50 years of providing excellent medical, dental, and legal care to Thousand Oaks’ neediest residents. Hundreds gathered tonight at Los Robles Greens to celebrate with cofounders Sharron Baird (at left), Diane Boyd, and Frank Dawson, MD, (right) who’s been with the clinic 48 (!) years, leading a dedicated team of practitioners and volunteers.

Hundreds visited at the annual Open Mosque Day event at the Islamic Center of the Conejo Valley (ICCV) in Newbury Park today, including clergy from other faiths, elected officials such as Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin, Ventura County Sheriff's Office sheriff Jim Fryhoff, Conejo Recreation and Park District director Ashley Orozco, Lisa Powell, CVUSD Trustee, and many neighbors. For decades, Imam Mehtar and ICCV has served worshippers and the larger community as an integral part of our community. Today’s talks were an excellent reminder that we do best when we get to know our neighbors, especially when we learn how much we have in common.

Today's opening of the Community Food Recovery Hub benefits residents three ways: First, recovery helps local pantries like Adelante Comunidad Conejo, Manna of Conejo Valley, and Safe Passage Youth Foundation feed our neighbors, too many of whom are hungry. Second, by keeping food out of landfills, we help prevent methane, a potent greenhouse gas, from release into the atmosphere. Finally, the volunteers at Adelante and other pantries build strong community bonds: By helping others, they help themselves, and help us all.

Power is out in many sections of Thousand Oaks, especially Newbury Park, due to Southern California Edison (SCE) Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) events. With high winds forecast again on Friday, the outages may continue. Some traffic lights are using 4-way flashers; be safe and treat these as 4-way stops.

SCE's website shows a mobile Community Resource Center (CRC) open through 10 pm in the parking lot of the Newbury Park library branch (which itself is currently without power). The CRC will open again at 8 am Friday. Edison personnel are available with PSPS information, water, light snacks, resiliency kits, mobile device charging, and portable medical equipment charging.

Other open CRCs nearby are at the Calabasas Community Center, 27040 Malibu Hills Road; and at the Moorpark-Arroyo Vista Recreation Center, 4550 Tierra Rejada Road. There is also a CRC open in Malibu but I would avoid travel there because of the 100-acre (and counting) Bryson Fire burning near Encinal and Mulholland.

A community resource center is available at the Newbury Park Library for those affected by the PSPS. The Library is not open; this is an SCE resource vehicle.
