Pillar #3 of Horizon Hills Parent Education: CO-REGULATION.
Young children do not come into this world knowing how to deal with large feelings; instead, they develop these abilities through many different experiences with the adults in their lives. This is called co-regulation.

By being present, providing comfort, and responding calmly to your child's needs, you are assisting them in developing the necessary skills to regulate their own emotions. You do not need to be completely calm to assist your child. Your presence, consistency, and ability to repair relationships are all important.

What is one thing that helps your child when he/she has large feelings?

What if preschool can also be a place for you to grow as a parent? At Horizon Hills, your child will have the opportunity to learn through exploration, play, and developing new skills; at the same time, you will learn about child development, behavior, communication and connection. Our parent-child classes provide a supportive environment for families to learn together while building a sense of community. Repair After Rupture
Breaking the Cycle of Non-Apologies

When we "blow it," the way we handle the aftermath defines the future of our relationship. Most of us were raised on "non-apologies," phrases like, "I am sorry you are mad," that minimize hurt rather than healing it.

You don't have to repeat this cycle. Discover the "Repair Recipe" to fully heal ruptures, rebuild trust, and teach your children what a true, sincere apology looks like.

This skill is a game-changer that will deepen the connection in every relationship in your life.

A stick becomes a magic wand. A rock becomes a treasure. A pile of leaves becomes an entire afternoon of exploration.
For young children, nature offers endless opportunities to learn through play.
When children explore natural materials, they're using their senses, asking questions, solving problems, and practicing new skills. And because nature doesn't come with instructions, children get to follow their own curiosity.
Outdoor play also encourages movement, creativity, and confidence as children experiment with what their bodies can do.
At Horizon Hills, we believe meaningful learning happens through hands-on experiences, both indoors and outdoors.
You don't need a forest or an elaborate activity to encourage nature play. A few leaves, a patch of dirt, or a walk around the block can offer plenty to explore.
What's your child's favorite outdoor treasure?

THE TEN PILLARS OF PARENT EDUCATION AT HORIZON HILLS
Pillar 3: Co-Regulation
Before children can regulate their emotions independently, they need repeated experiences of being supported through big feelings.
That's where co-regulation comes in.
When a toddler is overwhelmed, their developing brain may not yet have the skills to manage frustration, disappointment, or anger on its own. A calm, responsive adult can help them work through those emotions.
Co-regulation might look like sitting nearby during a meltdown, offering a hug, acknowledging frustration, or simply being present until your child is ready to reconnect.
And here's something important: co-regulation doesn't require you to be perfectly calm all the time.
Parents have big feelings, too. When you lose your patience, taking responsibility and repairing the connection afterward helps children learn that relationships can withstand difficult moments.
At Horizon Hills, we help parents understand the developmental reasons behind children's behavior and practice responding with connection rather than punishment.
What helps your child when their feelings get big?

Oak-Tober is making headlines!
We're excited to see the community taking notice of the 1,000 Oaks for Thousand Oaks initiative and our upcoming Oak-Tober celebration at Horizon Hills.

We're proud to support this effort and help introduce young children and their families to the importance of caring for our local environment.
Join us this Friday, October 16, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM for Oak-Tober!
We'll have hands-on nature activities, opportunities to meet local experts, food, and baby oak trees available for adoption while supplies last.

You yelled.
You lost your patience.
You handled something differently than you wish you had.
Now what?
Pillar 2 of the Horizon Hills Ten Pillars of Parent Education is Repair & Connection.
Healthy relationships aren’t relationships without conflict, frustration, or mistakes. What matters is what happens afterward.
Repair can sound like:
“I yelled, and that wasn’t okay.”
“I’m sorry. Can we try that again?”
“I love you, even when we’re having a hard time.”
When adults take responsibility and reconnect, children learn something powerful: relationships can have hard moments without losing love or connection.
And there’s another benefit. When we model genuine repair, we’re showing children what taking responsibility looks like rather than simply telling them to say “sorry.”
At Horizon Hills, parent education isn’t about becoming a perfect parent. It’s about understanding ourselves and our children so we have more tools for what comes next.

Sometimes letting a young child “help” makes the job take approximately 400% longer.
Let them anyway.
Young children are learning that they’re capable and that they have a meaningful place in the family. Small, real jobs give them opportunities to practice skills while experiencing the satisfaction of contributing.
Try:
• Matching socks
• Putting napkins on the table
• Watering plants
• Wiping up spills
• Putting toys in a basket
• Carrying lightweight groceries
• Feeding a pet with help
The goal isn’t for them to do the job perfectly. It’s for them to begin thinking, “I can do things. I can contribute. I belong here.”
At Horizon Hills, we encourage families to look for everyday opportunities that help children build confidence, independence, and connection.
