This year's Fire Prevention Week theme is Charge into Fire Safety!

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are a type of rechargeable battery used in a wide variety of consumer goods.

Responsible storing and disposal of batteries and electronics helps keep your home and the environment safe.

-Keep electronics and batteries in a temperature-controlled environment, avoiding extreme heat or cold.
-Do not place lithium-ion batteries in direct sunlight, or store in a hot or cold car.
-Avoid crushing, bending, or dropping a device and charger.
-Stop using your device right away if it gets too hot, smells strange, makes popping noises, changed in shape or if you see smoke.
-Do not put discarded lithium-ion batteries in piles.
-When recycling batteries tape the positive (+) side of the battery with clear packing, electrical or duct tape.
-To find disposal options, see blog post - https://www.des.nh.gov/news-and-media/blog/lithium-ion-batteries

🎃 Fall Decorating Safety

As Halloween approaches, here are a few safety reminders to keep in mind when decorating for the season:

• Never leave lit pumpkins unattended, and keep them away from flammable materials. Extinguish candles when not in use.
• Keep decorations from covering house numbers that may be needed by emergency responders.
• Check decorative lights for frayed wires or other damage.
• Keep decorations away from heating equipment.

Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable fall season!

Reminder: Our public information sessions are coming up soon.

On Tuesday, we will be at the Center Street Station, and the following Wednesday we will be at the Park Street Station.

At the sessions, we will talk about our current stations, provide a brief history of previous projects, discuss what has changed since last year’s proposals, and review the goals for the current project. We will also have a presentation on the proposed buildings.

Members of the public are encouraged to tour our facilities after the meeting.

If you can’t make one of the sessions, please feel free to reach out to Chief Valovanie for a recap of the session or to arrange a station tour.

🐾 National Pet Carbon Monoxide Safety Day

Our pets are part of the family, and carbon monoxide (CO) safety includes them too.

• Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, making it difficult to detect without an alarm.
• CO alarms provide an early warning when carbon monoxide is detected.
• CO alarms are commonly placed outside sleeping areas and on each level of a home.
• Monthly testing helps confirm that CO alarms are working properly.

Keeping CO safety in mind helps protect both people and pets in the home.
