It’s National Dessert Day, so we’re celebrating one of the sweetest days of the year—and sharing an important reminder for anyone thinking about selling homemade treats. 🍰

If you’re planning to sell food to the public in Tipton County, requirements may apply before you begin selling.

Indiana has specific requirements for Home-Based Vendors (HBVs), and only certain foods qualify for home-based vending. Other foods or types of food businesses may require a Retail Food Establishment permit.

Before you start selling those cookies, cakes, pies or other delicious creations, contact the Tipton County Health Department to make sure you understand which requirements apply to your business.

Planning to operate from home?
TCHD has a Home-Based Vendor Registration Form for qualifying vendors.

Opening a food establishment?
A Retail Food Establishment Application may be required.

Selling at a special event?
A Temporary Food Establishment Application may be required.

The best time to check your requirements is BEFORE you start selling.

Visit the Tipton County Health Department's Food Safety resources here:https://www.in.gov/localhealth/tiptoncounty/ or contact our Environmental Health Specialist, Lizzy, with questions.

World Mental Health Day is an opportunity to raise awareness, encourage conversations about mental health, and remind people that mental health deserves the same attention and care as physical health.

This year's World Mental Health Day theme is:

“Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change.”

Every person's experience with mental health is different.

That's why listening matters.

Listen to the person who says they're struggling.
Listen without judgment.
Listen before offering advice.
Listen to people who have lived through mental health challenges.

And remember:

🧠 Mental illness is real.
💙 Recovery is possible.
🤝 Support matters.
💬 Talking about mental health can save lives.

You don't have to wait for a crisis to take care of your mental health.

Take a moment today to check in with yourself—and check in with someone you care about.

TCHD's CredibleMind platform is available year-round with mental health information, resources and self-assessments.

You don't have to be a mental health professional to make a difference.

Sometimes it starts with a simple:

“How are you really doing?”

Check in with:

📱 A friend you haven't heard from lately
❤️ A family member
🏐 A teammate
🎓 A student
👩‍💼 A coworker
🏠 A neighbor

If they want to talk, listen.

You don't have to solve their problems. You don't have to have the perfect words.

Let them know:

“I'm here.”

Connection can be an important part of supporting mental health.

And if someone needs more support, help is available—including calling or texting 988 for crisis support.

We often think about getting help only when something has reached a crisis point.

But mental health deserves attention before things become overwhelming.

Maybe you've noticed:

• You're feeling more stressed than usual.
• You're not enjoying things you normally enjoy.
• You're having trouble sleeping.
• You're withdrawing from people.
• You're struggling to keep up with everyday responsibilities.
• Something just doesn't feel right.

You don't have to wait until you have the perfect explanation.

It's okay to simply say, “I'm not doing well.”

Talking with someone you trust or a healthcare professional can be a good place to start.

🧠 TCHD's CredibleMind also provides information and self-assessments that can help you learn more about your mental well-being.

One of the biggest barriers to seeking help can be the fear of being judged.

Words matter.

Instead of:

❌ “Just get over it.”
❌ “Everyone feels that way.”
❌ “You have nothing to be upset about.”
❌ “You don't seem depressed.”

Try:

💙 “I'm here for you.”
💙 “Thank you for telling me.”
💙 “That sounds difficult.”
💙 “How can I support you?”

We don't have to have all the answers.

Sometimes listening without judgment is the most helpful thing we can do.

This Mental Illness Awareness Week, let's make it easier—not harder—for people to talk about their mental health.

As we recognize Mental Illness Awareness Week, let's talk about an important distinction:

🧠 Mental health

Mental health is part of everyone's overall health. It includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being and can affect how we think, feel, cope with stress, build relationships, and handle everyday life.

Everyone has mental health.

💙 Mental illness

Mental illness refers to diagnosable health conditions that can affect a person's thoughts, emotions, behavior, or ability to function in daily life.

Examples include depression, anxiety disorders, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

Not everyone has a mental illness—but everyone has mental health.

And just like our physical health, our mental health can change throughout our lives.

You can have good mental health and still experience difficult days, stress, grief, or challenging emotions. And someone living with a mental illness can experience periods of good mental health and recovery.

The important thing is understanding, not labeling.

TCHD's CredibleMind platform is a great place to learn more about mental health, explore different topics, and take a mental health self-assessment.

Mental Illness Awareness Week begins today.

Mental health conditions are part of the human experience, yet stigma can make it harder for people to talk about what they're experiencing or seek support.

This week, we're encouraging our Tipton County community to:

💬 Talk openly about mental health.
👂 Listen without judgment.
🧠 Learn instead of assuming.
🤝 Support the people around you.
💙 Know where to find help.

Mental Illness Awareness Week was established in 1990 to raise awareness, fight stigma and promote support for people affected by mental health conditions.

You don't have to personally experience a mental health condition to be part of creating a community where people feel safe asking for help.

What comes to mind when you hear ADHD?

ADHD is often associated with difficulty paying attention, but it can involve much more—including challenges with organization, managing time, impulse control and regulating attention.

And ADHD doesn't only affect children. It can continue into adolescence and adulthood.

Understanding ADHD can help us replace assumptions with understanding and support.

If you or someone you care about is wondering whether ADHD may be affecting daily life, CredibleMind is a place to start learning.

October is a great time to check in with yourself—not just physically, but mentally, too.

Throughout this month, the Tipton County Health Department will be highlighting three topics that affect people of all ages:

🧠 ADHD
🤝 Peer Pressure & Bullying
💙 Depression

We'll also be recognizing Mental Illness Awareness Week and World Mental Health Day on October 10.

Mental health is part of overall health. Learning more, recognizing when something doesn't feel right, and knowing where to find support are all important steps.

TCHD's CredibleMind offers information, resources and self-assessments to help you learn more about your mental well-being.
