The Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office was proud to participate Sunday in the 2026 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in downtown Toledo!

Members of our team joined thousands of others in walking the course, and one of our own even ran the 5K!

It was great to see so many people come together to support breast cancer survivors, honor those we have lost and help raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer.

Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered and helped make Sunday such a special morning in downtown Toledo!

A Lucas County judge sentenced Matthew Exton today to 20 to 24½ years in prison for attempting to shoot and kill his ex-wife inside a Toledo restaurant.

On Sept. 4, 2026, a Lucas County jury found Exton, 43, guilty of attempted murder and two counts of felonious assault, with fi***rm specifications, for his actions inside Sabira restaurant on April 11, 2025.

“Getting to this day was a complete team effort by our office. I appreciate the work Rose Mock, Michael Loisel and Mark Petiya put into leading this case over the last year and a half. Most importantly, we hope today’s sentence provides some sense of closure for the victims seated at the table and the Sabira employees and patrons whose lives were put at risk that evening. Even Judge Gary Cook acknowledged the trauma the restaurant employees experienced and the bravery they showed,” Lucas County Prosecuting Attorney Julia R. Bates said.

Congratulations to all of the finishers in the this morning!

Members of our office were excited to support runners in the half marathon and marathon at the mile 3.3 water stop, just outside our office. It was a great way to start a Sunday morning, with so many runners making their way through downtown Toledo.

We also received some rave reviews on our Gatorade mix. We worked all night perfecting that powder-to-water ratio!

Thank you to everyone, near and far, who chose to run in Lucas County!

Join the Lucas County Prosecutor's Office this Saturday for Tammy's Walk at Walbridge Park in Toledo for a free event supporting Advocates for Victims and Justice Inc.

Tammy Bowlin-Macrae was a mother of three who was killed by her boyfriend in 2007. Her family remembers her as someone who always had a smile on her face, lit up a room and worked hard for her children.

In the difficult days and months after Tammy's death, victim advocates were there for her family, helping them navigate the court process, keeping them informed and standing beside them at every hearing. That same support continues today for victims and families who come through the Lucas County Prosecutor's Office.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, with the walk at 9:30 a.m. We hope you'll join us in remembering Tammy and supporting victims and their families throughout Lucas County.

Today, we join communities across the nation in celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

As you celebrate with family and friends this Independence Day, please do so safely and responsibly. If your plans include alcohol, use a designated driver or another safe way home. Celebrate with professional fireworks shows, not gunfire. Bullets fired into the air must come down, and celebratory gunfire can seriously injure or kill innocent people.

Whether you're on the road or on the water, make safety part of your celebration.

From Lucas County Prosecuting Attorney Julia R. Bates and all of us at the Lucas County Prosecutor's Office, have a safe and happy Fourth of July!
