Grove Patterson Academy PTO Grove Patterson Academy (GPA) is a Tuition-Free Pre-K through 8th grade magnet school. RATED 4.5/5 ⭐️ by the Ohio Department of Education.

The #1 Elementary School in Toledo. Grove Patterson Academy (GPA) is a Tuition-Free Kindergarten through 8th grade magnet school open to all students who live in Toledo and surrounding areas. While attending GPA, your child will experience a rigorous, research based Success for All Reading curriculum, combined with a positive school climate that encourages self motivation in students; a specially selected and committed faculty who maintain high expectations for your students success; and an enriched physical environment with Foreign Language Instruction in Spanish. Your child will also benefit from “Instructional Looping” of 1st and 2nd grade, 3rd and 4th grade, which allows teachers to remain with your child for two years of concentrated instruction. Students are further supported by technologically up-to-date classrooms and 1:1 technology. Students are required to wear uniforms to enhance expectations for student success and learning. School Bus Transportation is also provided for all TPS students that reside more than 1.0 miles from school.

Parents,

Does your child seriously read to you every night? I know you are tired, they are tired, we are tired but we cannot underestimate the importance of this.

Parents can I also say this….we know when they are not reading to you at home. Do you know how we know? Here are the Top 3..

1. Their fluency score barely moves. Next month you will receive his/her fluency score. We will also share how many words they should be reading and how many words the class is averaging. It is an eye opener to many!

2. K-1 students struggle re-reading the material, when by Wednesday it should be automatic.

3. THEY TELL US

So please if you do nothing else Monday-Thursday allow your child to read to you.

For those of you that do this faithfully, every night, even through the tears and the groans WE SEE YOU!

Later I will share exemplar examples of what a Read and Respond should look like.

It will pay off later! Literally!

Did you know that practicing reading is a lot like practicing a sport or learning an instrument? The more your children practice, the better you get!!

Reading out loud for 20 minutes every night helps build fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension!! Adults must listen to their child read prior to their child writing the response. Once the child writes then the adult can sign it!

Why do we ask an adult to listen to your child read every night?
Because reading out loud helps you become a stronger, smoother, more confident reader! When an adult listens, they can help with tricky words, ask questions, and make sure you understand what you are reading.

Tonight, remember: Your child must read out-loud for 20 minutes, write your response, and a parent or another adult must sign the Read & Respond. Every night of reading makes a difference!

The parents are very important in the process in becoming a successful reader.
