Lucas Soil & Water Conservation District LSWCD is here to help you care for our natural resources through education and technical assistance.

Lucas SWCD helps with:
- Implementing farm conservation practices that keep soil in the fields and out of waterways. We co-manage the Blue Creek Conservation Area with Metroparks Toledo to demonstrate these practices. We also rent conservation tillage equipment to local farmers.

- Conserving and restoring wetlands, which purify water and provide habitat for wildlife. We work to provide accurate wetland mapping for the county using a state-of-the-art Geographic Information System or GIS.

- Teaching the value of natural resources through classroom presentations, educational field trips, workshops, and materials. School districts who work with us have substantially increased the percent of students passing the science portion of the Sixth Grade Ohio Proficiency Test.

- Protecting groundwater resources. With the assistance of volunteers, we are monitoring the level of groundwater in the Oak Openings region of western Lucas County.

- Promoting the planting of trees and other green covers to hold soil in place, clean the air, provide cover for wildlife, and beautify neighborhoods. Our annual tree sale provides low-cost seedlings and native grass seed to hundreds of local landowners each year.

- Providing local conservation leadership and encourage conservation efforts. Our Board and staff hold positions in multiple local and statewide organizations which promote stewardship of natural resources.

Students at Washington Local Schools Monac Elementary and Springfield Schools' Community Holland Intermediate recently heard the "buzz" 🐝on the importance of pollinators!

Monac 2nd graders learned how pollen is delivered to the flowers and that not every piece of pollen makes it. They then had fun making their own pollinator, a bee! 🐝

Holland 4th graders learned that it is not easy to migrate as a monarch butterfly 🦋 as they tried to make their way to the overwintering grounds. Many butterflies were injured, eaten by predators, or ran out of food - but a few did have fair weather and plenty of food to finish the journey!
