Happy International Coffee Day!

Did you know Toledo was once home to one of the country’s major coffee companies? To celebrate, we’re highlighting the collection of Alvin Mansfield Woolson, a co-founder of the Woolson Spice Company.

The company was best known for its Lion Coffee brand and became a major wholesale dealer of coffee, tea and spices. It revolutionized pre-roasted, packaged coffee, and by the 1890s, its Toledo operation was roasting about one million pounds of coffee a week. Woolson, a Civil War veteran, moved to Toledo in 1875 and later established the company in 1882.

The Canaday Center holds Woolson’s scrapbook (1916–1918), which documents his activities with the Grand Army of the Republic through circulars, programs, correspondence, and newspaper clippings.

A little local history to go with your coffee today.

What was life like in Ohio in the early 1800s? The John Renick Osborn Papers offer a personal look at a time of early statehood, rapid population growth, expanding infrastructure, and economic development, as Ohio established its government and court system and became increasingly connected to the young United States.

Born in Circleville in 1813, Osborn came from a prominent Ohio legal and political family. His father, Ralph, was a lawyer who served as Ohio State Auditor for 18 years and later as a state senator. Relatives on his mother’s side included judges and legislators. Osborn grew up in Columbus and later became a lawyer himself.

In 1876, at age 63, he wrote his memoirs, describing his education at Ohio University, law studies, meeting his future wife, beginning his career, and his 1834 commission as a major in the Ohio Militia. He also describes Columbus as an intimate but still undeveloped community.

Osborn’s memoir provides a firsthand perspective on education, family, and professional life in early Ohio. Follow the link for more information on this collection. https://canadaycenter.utoledo.edu/repositories/2/resources/411

Today marks 65 years since the University of Toledo dedicated a genuine Nike-Ajax rocket on campus. The presentation recognized UToledo’s strong partnership with the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps, which trained more than 7,000 officers and civilians through a seven-year program from 1952 to 1959. Members of the University and Toledo community first proposed acquiring a rocket for campus and worked with military officials to make it happen. Their efforts led the Ordnance Corps to provide the Nike-Ajax to the University. Presented at the 1961 football season opener, the rocket remains a central fixture outside the Glass Bowl and a distinctive part of UToledo’s history.

Today we remember Gloria Steinem, one of the most influential voices in the women’s rights movement and a Toledo native.

Born in Toledo in 1934, Steinem spent part of her childhood living with her mother on the city’s east side. The University of Toledo was also part of her family’s story. Her parents, Leo and Ruth Steinem, met while they were students at the University, where they both worked on and later served as editors of the student newspaper, The Teaser.

Steinem would later make several visits to the University herself. In 1970, she came to campus with Dorothy Pitman to kick off that year’s Convocation Series, speaking about the women’s liberation movement. She returned in 1981 to speak about reproductive freedom and equality for women, and in 1993, she received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Studies from UToledo President James Horton.

Following the news of her passing, we are looking back at these photographs from Gloria Steinem’s visits to The University of Toledo and remembering the lasting impact of her life and work.

Remembering Dolly Parton ❤️

On August 29, 1979, Dolly Parton performed at the University of Toledo’s Centennial Hall, as it was known then. Tomorrow marks 47 years since she took the stage on campus.

We’re honoring her legacy with a look back at a few photos and articles from our scrapbook collection documenting her visit to UToledo.

A masterpiece of early printing in our rare book collection.

Printed in Venice in 1471, this edition of Institutiones Oratoriae (The Institutes of Oratory) by the Roman educator Quintilian was produced by the celebrated printer Nicolaus Jenson, whose elegant Roman typeface influenced the design of printed books for centuries. A French-born craftsman who established his press in Venice, Jenson introduced his graceful Roman type in 1470, drawing inspiration from classical Roman letterforms. Published just one year later, this volume provides an early example of the typeface that would become a model for later printers and typographers.
