Toms River deserves better than Rodrick’s rampage against our Police Department!
93 YEARS OF PRIDE, TRADITION AND LEADERSHIP — AND THEN CAME DANIEL RODRICK!
WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE TOMS RIVER POLICE DEPARTMENT?
On June 23, 1933, the Dover Township Police Department was officially established with just three officers.
Over the next nine decades, it grew into one of New Jersey’s most respected municipal police departments and the largest in Ocean County.
In 1961, the FBI ranked the department SECOND BEST IN NEW JERSEY!
For generations, the department was built on PROFESSIONALISM, RESPECT, STABILITY, EXPERIENCE and LEADERSHIP.
When Mitchell Little was sworn in on January 1, 2014, he became only the 9TH POLICE CHIEF IN THE DEPARTMENT’S HISTORY!
Think about that. Nine chiefs over more than 80 years!
THEN DANIEL RODRICK BECAME MAYOR ON JANUARY 1, 2024.
Look at what has happened since:
🔴 2024 — CHIEF MITCH LITTLE: Retired following a contentious relationship with the Rodrick administration.
🔴 2024 — CHIEF PETER SUNDACK: Appointed by Rodrick, only to go on leave shortly afterward.
🔴 2025 — CHIEF GUY MAIRE: Sworn in July 30, 2025.
🔴 2027 — ANOTHER NEW POLICE LEADER: Chief Maire has now announced his retirement effective January 1, 2027. The township will once again need someone to lead the department.
THREE CHIEFS DURING RODRICK’S FIRST TWO YEARS, AND ANOTHER LEADERSHIP TRANSITION COMING IN 2027!
But the revolving door of leadership is only part of the problem.
❌ POLICE STAFFING HAS DECLINED. The department entered 2024 with approximately 162 sworn officers. By the end of 2025, that number had fallen to approximately 143.
❌ HIRING QUALIFICATIONS HAVE BEEN CHANGED. The Rodrick administration supported changes to police hiring requirements despite serious concerns raised by the Ocean County Prosecutor about the potential risks.
❌ LEADERSHIP INSTABILITY. Experienced leadership has been replaced by uncertainty, turnover and repeated transitions.
❌ CONCERNS ABOUT MORALE. How can officers have confidence in their future when the department’s leadership is constantly changing?
❌ A DEPARTMENT UNDER PRESSURE. In 2025, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office assumed responsibility for the department’s Internal Affairs function, raising additional questions about oversight and management.
And now Rodrick acknowledges that the department does not have a captain with the required two years of service to qualify for permanent appointment as chief!
HOW DOES A DEPARTMENT WITH 93 YEARS OF HISTORY FIND ITSELF WITHOUT AN IMMEDIATELY QUALIFIED SUCCESSOR?
That is a question the MAYOR needs to answer!
Let’s be perfectly clear.
THIS IS NOT A CRITICISM OF OUR POLICE OFFICERS!
The dedicated men and women of the Toms River Police Department continue to put on their uniforms, protect our families and serve our community every single day.
They deserve our RESPECT.
They deserve our SUPPORT.
They deserve STABLE, EXPERIENCED LEADERSHIP.
And they deserve a mayor who puts PUBLIC SAFETY ahead of POLITICS.
The Toms River Police Department spent more than 90 years building its reputation.
In less than three years, Daniel Rodrick has presided over an extraordinary period of leadership turnover, declining staffing and controversial changes to hiring standards.
That is not progress.
THAT IS A FAILURE OF LEADERSHIP!
Our police officers deserve better.
Our residents deserve better.
TOMS RIVER DESERVES BETTER!
SUPPORT OUR POLICE OFFICERS. DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY FROM THE MAYOR!
