Protecting our open spaces is an investment in the future of Ocean County.

It was great to visit Breton Woods in Brick and highlight what we can accomplish when the County, our municipalities, and residents work together.

With over 30,000 acres already preserved, I'm proud of what we've accomplished and look forward to continuing our efforts to protect Ocean County's natural beauty for generations to come.

A proud day for Ocean County and the newest members of our law enforcement community!

Last week, I joined Commissioner Frank Sadeghi to celebrate the graduation of Basic Recruit Class #126 from the Ocean County Police Academy.

There is something special about watching a new generation of officers take that next step toward serving their communities. Behind every graduate are months of early mornings, demanding training, personal sacrifices, and a determination to succeed. It's an accomplishment they should be incredibly proud of.

I want to extend my appreciation to Ocean County Sheriff Michael Mastronardy, Undersheriff Thomas Dellane, Training Coordinator William Dikun, and the entire Academy staff for the time, knowledge, and dedication they invest in preparing these young men and women for the road ahead.

To our newest officers, the work you are about to do matters. You will be called upon to help people on some of their hardest days, make difficult decisions, and be someone your community can count on. Never lose sight of the reason you chose this profession.

Congratulations, Class #126! Wishing you all a safe, rewarding, and successful career. Ocean County is proud of you!

What an amazing afternoon at Ocean County’s 4th Annual Disability Employment Awareness Job & Resource Fair! Since 2022, this event has helped connect Ocean County residents with employers, career resources, support services, and meaningful opportunities that can make a real difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities every day.

A special thank you to the Ocean County Commission for Individuals with Disabilities, Ocean County Workforce Development Board, Ocean County College’s Office of Access and Disability Services, New Jersey Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services, Ocean County Library, and all of the employers and community partners who helped make today possible.

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month in Ocean County, and today was a wonderful reminder of the talent, dedication, and contributions individuals with disabilities bring to our workplaces and communities every day.

Thank you to everyone who attended, participated, and helped make this year’s event such a success. My fellow commissioners and I are proud to continue supporting opportunities for all Ocean County residents and look forward to seeing this important event continue to grow!

It was a pleasure to join my fellow Commissioners, Commissioner Frank Sadeghi and Commissioner Jennifier Bacchione along with other local dignitaries and members of the community today for the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the new Ocean County Library Stafford Branch in Manahawkin.

This beautiful new facility represents an important investment in Stafford Township and in the future of library services throughout Ocean County. Our libraries are much more than places to borrow books, they provide educational resources, technology, programming, and opportunities for residents of all ages.

Congratulations to the Ocean County Library team and everyone whose hard work and dedication helped bring this project from planning to completion. I look forward to seeing this new branch serve our residents and families for many years to come.

The opioid crisis has impacted far too many individuals and families across Ocean County, and it’s important that we continue working together to make sure help and resources are available where they are needed most.

I want to thank the members of the Ocean County Opioid Advisory Council, along with our Human Services team and community partners, for the tremendous amount of work that went into developing this plan. The input received directly from our community will help guide how opioid settlement funds are used over the next several years.

I’m grateful to serve as liaison to the Council and look forward to continuing this important work together for the residents and families of Ocean County.

The Ocean County Board of Commissioners recently endorsed the Ocean County Opioid Advisory Council's (OCOAC) 2027-2029 plan, which serves as a framework for continued collaboration and community-focused efforts addressing opioid prevention, treatment, recovery, and overdose prevention throughout Ocean County, funded through national opioid settlement funds.

Through an extensive community-focused research process, the OCOAC identified several priority areas for the next three years, including public awareness, treatment and recovery services, harm reduction, peer support, and reducing barriers to service access for individuals and families affected by opioid use.

"Direct community input was an incredibly important part of the planning process," Ocean County Commissioner Sam Ellenbogen said, liaison to the Ocean County Opioid Advisory Council. "Paired with other available data, community feedback informed action steps for the appropriate use of national opioid settlement funds and helped to identify service gaps so we can strengthen the system of care."

As Ocean County implements the 2027-2029 Opioid Advisory Council Plan, competitive contracts will be available for programs that address community needs and priorities.

Programs funded in the previous cycle have already reached thousands of residents in Ocean County. More than 5,000 Narcan and harm reduction kits have been distributed, and over 125 businesses have joined opioid prevention and treatment initiatives. Additionally, 2,000 students have received drug prevention education, while over 780 people have gained access to treatment and supportive services. Outreach efforts have also resulted in more than 8,000 contacts to community partners, providing information and referrals.

Interested organizations and providers are encouraged to monitor the Ocean County Procurement Portal for upcoming solicitations, at procurement.opengov.com/portal/oceancounty. Interested parties may also register with OpenGov to receive alerts regarding Ocean County solicitations and procurement opportunities.

"Ocean County is committed to using these funds responsibly to enhance programs and services for all of our residents and families effected by substance use disorder," Ellenbogen said.

The OCOAC, established in 2022, provides recommendations to the County and participating municipalities regarding the allocation of national opioid settlement funds from major opioid supply chain companies, which are distributed to support local efforts for opioid crisis prevention.

Proud to see Ocean County continuing to create meaningful opportunities for individuals living with disabilities.

This Job and Resource Fair brings together employers, resources, and support services all in one place, with employers who are actively looking to hire. It’s a great example of what can be accomplished when our County departments and community partners work together.

I’m looking forward to another successful event on October 6 at Ocean County College and, most importantly, helping connect our residents with real opportunities for meaningful employment.

Since 2022, the annual Disability Employment Awareness Job and Resource Fair has connected Ocean County residents with disabilities to valuable resources, support services, and meaningful employment opportunities.

This year's event will take place on October 6 at Ocean County College's Jon and Judith Larson Center (Building 8), from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"The event aims to create a more direct path to employment for our residents living with disabilities, while promoting inclusivity across the County," said Ocean County Commissioner Sam Ellenbogen, liaison to Ocean County Department of Human Services and the Ocean County Commission for Individuals with Disabilities. "The Job Fair is made possible through the collaboration of several Ocean County departments, community partners and leading County employers."

At the event, job seekers will have an opportunity to connect directly with potential employers, submit resumes and even complete in-person interviews. The event also includes a presentation and brief ceremony at 12 p.m., recognizing employers who hired individuals with disabilities and employees with disabilities who have excelled in their careers.

Attendees can also gather information on support services, disability resources and programs available through local, county, and state providers.

"Having access to multiple organizations in one location saves time and effort for families navigating these systems," Ellenbogen said. "The Disability Employment Awareness Job and Resource Fair is unique because local employers attending are actively looking to fill vacant roles, which means individuals could leave the event with real next steps towards meaningful employment."

The event is a partnership between the Ocean County Commission for Individuals with Disabilities, the Ocean County Workforce Development Board, the Office of Access and Disability Services at Ocean County College, the NJ Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services, and the Ocean County Library.

"We have seen annual growth in attendance of the Job Fair, and it showcases the positive work that gets done when our County departments come together towards a shared goal," Ellenbogen said.

The Job Fair pairs well with individuals already involved with the Ocean County Career Center, which provides job search support and career counseling to residents.

In addition to the Job Fair, the Ocean County Board of Commissioners plan to recognize employees living with disabilities by proclaiming October 2026 as Disability Employment Awareness Month in Ocean County, during the Ocean County Board of Commissioners meeting on September 30 at 4 p.m. in Room 119, 101 Hooper Ave., Toms River.

To learn more about the Job Fair, visit the Ocean County Career Center website at oceancountycareers.com.

Preserving what makes Ocean County such a special place to live is incredibly important.

Protecting open space, farmland, forests, wetlands, and our natural resources today helps ensure they’re still here for our children and future generations to enjoy.

Proud of the work Ocean County has done to preserve more than 30,000 acres, and committed to continuing to protect the natural beauty and character of our County.

Well said Mike!
