25 years ago today, 2,977 lives were lost.
Moms, dads, brothers, sisters, grandparents, sons, and daughters woke up expecting nothing more than another day—going to work, going about their lives, and returning home to the people they loved.
At 8:46 a.m., everything changed forever.
The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, claimed the lives of 2,977 innocent people across New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and aboard United Airlines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania.
Among those killed were 343 FDNY firefighters, 23 NYPD officers, 37 Port Authority Police officers, and many other first responders who ran toward the danger to help others. In total, 441 first responders from more than 30 agencies lost their lives that day.
Survivors of that day still carry the physical and emotional scars.
Today, we remember every single life lost on September 11, 2001.
We remember the civilians who never made it home.
We remember the firefighters, paramedics, police officers, and other first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice.
We remember the passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93, who fought back and gave their lives trying to stop another attack.
And as firefighters, we remember the men and women who answered the call, ran toward unimaginable danger, and made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of others.
25 years later, their names are still remembered.
Their sacrifices are still honored.
Their stories are still told.
