Officer-Involved Shooting – Tooele County

The Tooele County Sheriff’s Office would like to provide additional information regarding the officer-involved shooting that occurred on October 14, 2026, in Tooele County.

The deceased suspect has been identified as Justin Flanders, age 41. Mr. Flanders had an active felony warrant based on an investigation conducted by the Pleasant Grove Police Department, as well as an outstanding fugitive warrant.

Officers with the Pleasant Grove Police Department followed Mr. Flanders into Tooele County while coordinating with additional law enforcement agencies to assist in taking him into custody.

As Mr. Flanders exited Interstate 80 at Exit 94 onto SR-179, officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Mr. Flanders failed to yield and increased his speed, resulting in a short pursuit. Moments later, his vehicle sideswiped a semi-truck and subsequently rolled.

Following the crash, Mr. Flanders exited the vehicle. Officers issued multiple commands, but Mr. Flanders failed to comply. Mr. Flanders’ subsequent actions resulted in six officers discharging their fi****ms. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

This remains an active investigation being conducted by the Utah County Critical Incident Response Team.

UPDATE: The owner has been located, and the horses have been safely returned home. Thank you to everyone who helped spread the word!

These two horses were recently found wandering near the South Rim area and are currently being cared for by a local resident who has been kind enough to look after them.

Both horses are safe and being cared for, but we would love to see them reunited with their owners!

If they remain unclaimed by the end of today, October 14, the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office will take possession of the horses and transport them to a rescue facility, where they will continue to receive care while efforts are made to locate their owners.

Once the horses have been transported to the rescue facility, anyone claiming ownership will be required to provide proof of ownership and may be responsible for reasonable costs associated with their care.

Horses that remain unclaimed may eventually be sold at auction. We are hopeful we can locate their owners well before that becomes necessary.

If you recognize either of these horses or know who they may belong to, please contact the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office at (435) 882-5600 and reference case #26-S07474.

Let's get these guys home! Please share and help us spread the word.

This week, Deputy Harrison was recognized for completing an additional 10 years of service with the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Harrison previously retired as the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office Jail Commander, but it didn’t take long before he returned to continue serving as a Deputy Bailiff. He has now spent another 10 years serving our agency and community.

We are grateful for Deputy Harrison’s continued dedication and many years of service.

This week, we celebrated the retirements of two longtime members of the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Fish is retiring after an incredible 37 years in law enforcement. He began his career in Salt Lake County and, after retiring there, continued his service with our agency for another 17 years in a number of different roles.

We also celebrated Deputy Hansen on his final day with the Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Hansen has spent the past 15 years serving as a deputy in the Tooele County Jail after previously serving at the Utah State Prison.

We’re grateful to both Deputy Fish and Deputy Hansen for their years of service and dedication to our community. They will both be greatly missed, and we wish them nothing but the best in retirement.

The Tooele County Sheriff’s Office is hoping to reunite this goat with its owner. The goat was found near 700 W. and 200 S. in Tooele on September 24, 2026.

If you are the owner, or know who the goat belongs to, please contact the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office at 435-882-5600 and reference Case No. 26-S07027.

If the goat is not claimed, it is scheduled to be sold at public auction on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Anderson Livestock Auction.

We are often asked if impounded livestock can be adopted. Unfortunately, under Utah law, unclaimed livestock must be sold at public auction.

Our Search and Rescue team had a slightly different kind of rescue today.

After an adventurous dog found his way into a mine and couldn’t get back out, our SAR volunteers responded and went to work.

The team did a terrific job getting him safely out of the mine and back to his family.

A paws-itively successful rescue!

Last night, we attended the 30th Annual Utah Sheriffs’ Association Conference for some great training and the opportunity to recognize a few of our own.

Several of our deputies and our lead jail nurse received Lifesaving Awards for their quick actions that saved the life of an inmate.

We’re proud of our team and the work they do every day!
