Kicking Off Fire Prevention Month!

Yesterday, Mission Township Fire Department had the opportunity to welcome approximately 70 first-grade students from Farley Elementary to Station 40!

Students got an up-close look at life at the fire station! They toured our apparatus and Station 40, learned about fire safety and firefighter gear, and even got some hands-on experience flowing water from a fire hose!

We always enjoy getting the chance to meet the kids in our community, teach them a little about fire safety, and show them what firefighters do every day.

To top it all off, each student later wrote us a thank-you letter and created a drawing from their visit. We really enjoyed reading through them and seeing Station 40 through their eyes!

A big thank you to the Farley Elementary teachers and students for spending the morning with us!

With the recent heavy rainfall, many ditches, creeks, and low-lying areas around our community are carrying more water than usual.

Even a familiar roadway can become unsafe very quickly.
If you come across water over the road, don’t try to guess the depth or whether your vehicle can make it through. Turn around and find another route.

Please give yourself extra time, slow down in wet conditions, and help us keep our roadways safe.

We had a great time welcoming Auburn-Washburn Parents as Teachers to Station 40!

It’s always a good day when we get to show the next generation around the firehouse and share a little about fire safety. Thanks for coming out and spending the morning with us!

Introducing Our “New” Apparatus - Squad 40!

Squad 40 has received its new graphics to match the rest of our fleet, so we figured it was finally time to officially introduce the newest, or technically, “new-to-us” member of the MTFD fleet.

We took delivery of Squad 40 in late March of 2026 after purchasing it as a used apparatus. When we began looking at options, we knew we wanted to be responsible with the money entrusted to us by our taxpayers. Purchasing a quality used truck allowed us to meet an important operational need without the significantly higher cost and long build times associated with ordering a brand-new fire truck.

Squad 40 has been in service since late May and has already proven to be a great addition to our response capabilities.

Most of the time, you’ll see Squad 40 responding first to medical calls. It carries our medical equipment, including Advanced Life Support equipment, while also allowing our firefighters to bring their full personal protective equipment with them.

But one of the biggest reasons we chose this truck is because it can do much more than respond to medical calls.

Squad 40 carries a small set of vehicle extrication equipment, firefighting tools, basic rope rescue equipment, SCBAs for hazardous environments, a custom-built extension ladder, and other equipment that allows its crew to begin handling a wide variety of emergencies.

As our call volume has increased over the years, we have also experienced more occasions where multiple emergencies occur at the same time. Squad 40 gives us another capable response unit that can begin operations on almost any type of call while additional apparatus and personnel are responding.

There was also another major reason behind this purchase.
Before selecting this truck, our internal apparatus committee, made up of 10 of our full-time and part-time firefighters and fire officers, evaluated our response area and identified approximately 60 homes within Mission Township that present additional access or response challenges.

Those challenges can include long or narrow driveways, limited turnaround space, difficult terrain, water-supply concerns, and other factors that can make getting a full-size structural fire engine directly to a home difficult.

That is where Squad 40 offers us another option.

Squad 40 is considered a mini pumper. Despite being built on a much smaller Ford F-550 4x4 chassis, it carries 300 gallons of water and a 1,500 GPM fire pump, the same rated pump capacity as our full-size structural engines.

This gives our crews the ability to get a smaller, highly maneuverable apparatus closer to homes with difficult access and begin an initial fire attack while our larger apparatus establishes a sustained water supply from a hydrant, tender operation, or other water source.

In short, we weren’t looking for another truck just to add another truck to the station. We were looking for something that could fill several gaps at once; medical response, overlapping calls, difficult-access properties, rescue incidents, and initial fire attack, while making the best use of taxpayer dollars.

Squad 40 Specs:
• 2022 Fouts Brothers Ford 4x4 Commercial Mini Pumper
• Ford F-550 4x4 chassis
• 6.7L diesel engine
• 475 horsepower
• 7,695 miles
• 1,500 GPM fire pump
• 300-gallon water tank
• 15-gallon foam tank

We would like to thank our Township Board members and, most importantly, the residents and taxpayers of Mission Township who continue to support our department.

Every major purchase we make is made with the goal of improving the service we provide while being responsible with the resources entrusted to us.

We’re excited to have Squad 40 serving Mission Township for many years to come!

Incident Recap

Last night, shortly before 8:00 PM, Mission Township Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 3700 block of SW Nottingham Road. Upon arrival, crews found light smoke and fire showing from the structure.

Firefighters quickly made entry, located the fire in the basement, and were able to extinguish it before the fire could spread and cause additional damage.

We would also like to thank our partners with Shawnee County Fire District 4, who responded through our auto aid agreement with additional personnel and apparatus. Agreements like these help ensure additional resources are available when needed and allow our departments to work together to better serve our communities.

A big thank you to Shawnee County Fire District 4 for hosting today’s Vehicle Extrication Technician class and giving crews from across the county the opportunity to come together, train, and learn from one another.

Joint training like this strengthens relationships between departments and helps ensure we are better prepared to work together when the real call comes in. We appreciate the invitation and the opportunity to be a part of it!

After More Than 20 Years of Service, It’s Time to Say Goodbye!

After serving Mission Township Fire Department and our community since 2003, one of our longtime apparatus is officially up for sale.

This pumper-tanker has been a part of our department for more than two decades, responding to countless calls, training events, and emergencies throughout Mission Township and the surrounding area. While it is time for us to move forward with changes to our fleet, this truck still has plenty of life left in it and has continued to be a great and dependable apparatus for our department.

Built on a Freightliner chassis, the truck features a 1,000 GPM pump and carries 1,800 gallons of water, making it a very versatile piece of equipment, especially for rural fire protection.

It is always a little bittersweet to see a truck leave after being such a familiar part of the department for so many years. We’re grateful for the service it has provided to our firefighters and our community since 2003, and we hope it can continue serving another department for years to come.

For anyone interested, the truck is currently listed for sale through Fire Truck Mall:

September 11, 2001. A day that changed our nation and the fire service forever.

Twenty-five years ago today, Americans watched unimaginable tragedy unfold in New York City, at the Pentagon, and aboard Flight 93. In the middle of that tragedy were ordinary people doing extraordinary things, helping strangers, protecting their communities, and running toward those who needed them most.

Among those lost were 343 FDNY firefighters who reported for duty that morning and never returned home.

Their sacrifice has become part of the history and tradition of the American fire service, but remembering September 11 is about more than remembering a number. It is about remembering the people, their families, the thousands of other lives lost, and the many responders who have since suffered or died from illnesses connected to their service at Ground Zero.

As new generations enter the fire service who were not yet alive on September 11, 2001, it becomes our responsibility to continue telling their story and keeping the promise made 25 years ago.
