πŸ”₯πŸš’ FIRE PREVENTION MONTH Day 16: Heating Your Home Safely! 🏠❀️

Did you know? Heating equipment is the second leading cause of house fires, accounting for roughly 13% of all residential building fires. Home fires also occur more frequently during the winter months than any other time of the year!

As cooler temperatures approach, the Topeka Fire Department (TFD) reminds residents to take a few simple precautions when heating their homes. Keeping your family warm AND safe should always be a priority! πŸ”₯🏑

🌑️ Follow these important home heating safety tips:

πŸ•― Keep a Safe Distance: Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from heat sources, including fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators, space heaters and candles.

🚫 Never Use Your Oven for Heat: Ovens are designed for cooking, not heating your home. Using an oven as a heat source can create serious fire and carbon monoxide hazards.

πŸ”Œ Turn Off Space Heaters: Always turn off space heaters when leaving a room or going to bed. Never leave them operating unattended.

🧹 Schedule Annual Maintenance: Have your heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected each year by a qualified professional.

❀️ Remember: Stay warm, stay safe! A few simple safety precautions can help prevent a devastating home fire and protect the people you love.

πŸš’ The Topeka Fire Department encourages everyone to make home heating safety a priority during Fire Prevention Month and throughout the colder months ahead!

πŸ”₯πŸš’ FIRE PREVENTION MONTH Day 15: Home Electrical Safety Tips! ⚑🏠

Electrical fires can start from overloaded outlets, damaged cords and improper use of power strips. Taking a few simple precautions can help prevent electrical fires and keep your home and family safe! ❀️

Your Topeka Fire Department (TFD) encourages residents to check their home's electrical outlets, extension cords and power strips for potential fire hazards.

⚑ ELECTRICAL OUTLET SAFETY TIPS:

πŸ”Œ Don't Overload Outlets: Plugging too many devices into one outlet can cause overheating and increase the risk of fire.

βœ… Secure Your Plugs: Always insert plugs fully into electrical outlets.

🚫 Never Force a Plug: Do not force a three-prong plug into a two-slot outlet.

πŸ‘Ά Protect Young Children: Install tamper-resistant electrical outlets to help prevent electrical injuries.

⚠️ Check for Loose Outlets: Replace wall outlets if plugs do not fit snugly.

πŸ”‹ EXTENSION CORD, POWER STRIP & SURGE PROTECTION SAFETY TIPS:

⚑ Avoid Overloading Power Strips: Never connect more electrical devices than a power strip is designed to handle.

πŸ›‘οΈ Choose Safer Power Strips: Use power strips equipped with internal overload protection.

πŸ” Inspect Extension Cords: Replace worn, old, frayed or damaged extension cords immediately.

🚫 Keep Cords in Safe Locations: Never run electrical cords under carpets or rugs or place them where they can become pinched or damaged.

Remember: Electrical safety starts at home! A few minutes spent checking your outlets, cords and power strips can help prevent a potentially devastating fire.

πŸš’ The Topeka Fire Department reminds everyone to make electrical safety a priority during Fire Prevention Month and throughout the year!

πŸ”₯πŸš’ FIRE PREVENTION MONTH: Appliance & Electrical Fire Safety Tips! πŸ”ŒπŸ

Did you know? Everyday household appliances can become fire hazards if they are not used and maintained properly!

During October's Fire Prevention Month, the Topeka Fire Department (TFD) reminds residents that practicing simple appliance and electrical safety habits can help prevent fires and keep your home and family safe! ❀️

πŸ‘‰ Follow these important appliance fire safety tips:

πŸ”Œ Plug Major Appliances Directly into Wall Outlets: Always plug refrigerators, stoves, washers and dryers directly into a wall outlet.

🚫 Avoid Extension Cords: Never use an extension cord with a major appliance. Extension cords can overheat and start a fire!

πŸ”‹ Unplug Small Appliances: When small appliances are not in use, unplug them to reduce potential fire hazards.

πŸ”₯ Keep Flammable Items Away: Keep anything that can burn away from lamps, light fixtures and light bulbs.

πŸ’‘ Use the Correct Light Bulbs: Always use light bulbs that match the recommended wattage listed on the lamp or light fixture.

⚠️ Inspect Appliance Cords: If an appliance has a cracked, damaged or loose electrical cord, stop using it and replace the appliance.

Remember: Fire prevention starts at home! Taking a few simple precautions today can help prevent a devastating fire tomorrow. 🏠

πŸš’ The Topeka Fire Department encourages everyone to make appliance and electrical safety a priority this October and throughout the year!

πŸ”₯πŸš’ FIRE PREVENTION MONTH: Clothes Dryer Safety Tips! 🧺πŸ”₯

Did you know? πŸ”₯ Failure to clean (31%) was the leading factor contributing to the ignition of clothes dryer fires in homes from 2018–2020.

During this October Fire Prevention Month, the Topeka Fire Department wants to remind residents that a little maintenance can go a long way in preventing a clothes dryer fire in your home! 🏠❀️

🧺 Follow these simple dryer safety tips to help protect your home and family:

πŸ”§ Professional Installation: Have your dryer installed and serviced by a qualified professional.

🚫 Never Skip the Lint Filter: Do not operate your dryer without a lint filter in place.

🧹 Clean the Lint Filter: Remove lint before and after every drying cycle.

πŸ”₯ Check Behind Your Dryer: Regularly clean behind your dryer where lint and dust can accumulate.

πŸ” Inspect the Venting System: Make sure the dryer vent is not damaged, crushed or restricted.

🏑 Check the Outdoor Vent: Ensure the outdoor vent flap opens freely when your dryer is operating.

❀️ Remember: A clean dryer is a safer dryer! Taking a few minutes to check and maintain your dryer can help prevent a fire and keep your family safe.

πŸš’ The Topeka Fire Department encourages everyone to make fire prevention a priority this October and all year long!

πŸš’πŸ”₯ The rivalry continues!

The Topeka Fire Explorers and Lawrence Fire Explorers have built a fun and exciting rivalry competing in the β€˜Explorer Games’ over the last couple of years. The loss Topeka experienced in overtime last year may have been the exact fuel they needed to come back this year and pull off the WIN!

Both teams did a great job, and we’re proud of the hard work and dedication they put into the competition. We can’t wait to see what another year of training brings when these two teams meet again next year! πŸ’ͺ🏼

When charging on a plane πŸ›«, keep portable charging devices on the tray table. Do not charge devices in overhead compartments and never charge e-cigarettes or vapes on a plane. If a battery overheats or fails, it is important for the flight crew to be able to respond quickly.
