Governor Laura Kelly recently signed an executive order designating the first Friday of each May as Kansas Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial Day.

This annual day of remembrance will honor Kansas law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty and recognize the service and sacrifice of all law enforcement officers across the state.

The Kansas Highway Patrol, along with our state and local partners, is committed to supporting law enforcement officers, their families, and their agencies following a tragic line-of-duty death.

Thank you, Governor Kelly, for establishing this day of remembrance and recognizing the continued service and sacrifice of Kansas law enforcement officers

Jimmie Dewayne Jacobs was born on May 7, 1933, in Beaver, Oklahoma. He graduated from Liberal High School in Liberal, Kansas, in 1951 and went on to serve in the United States Air Force until 1955.

Jacobs joined the Kansas Highway Patrol on July 16, 1956. After field training in Ulysses, he was stationed in Wellington. He transferred to El Dorado in 1959.

On October 6, 1959, Jacobs was on an emergency run, transporting blood needed for immediate surgery in Eureka. Jacobs picked up the blood from a Trooper at the El Dorado Turnpike gate and rushed east on U.S. 54 to a Greenwood County Sheriff's Deputy.

Approximately seven miles east of El Dorado, Jacobs passed a semi-truck and was starting to pass a 1 ½ - ton grain truck when it turned left in front of his patrol car. Jacobs struck the truck, entered the ditch, and struck a telephone pole. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The blood was recovered from the wrecked patrol car and relayed to the hospital. The physician later credited Trooper Jacobs and the Patrol for playing a major role in saving his patient.

Trooper Jacobs was survived by his wife and three-month-old daughter.

The Kansas Highway Patrol was formed and shaped by many men and women who came before each one of us. The legacy the Patrol enjoys today is due in part to the brave men and women who have answered the call for service, ten of whom made the ultimate sacrifice.

Today, we encourage you to think of Trooper Jimmie Jacobs, his family members, and friends who were left behind. We should all be grateful for his service.
