On this we recognize Hispanic Heritage Month, which is September 15 to October 15. Many Mexican families settled in Kansas during the early 1900s, fleeing from the Mexican Revolution and finding work throughout the state. While most became laborers on the railroads, they also worked in other industries including mining, agriculture, and meatpacking plants. Garden City, Topeka, and Kansas City became local hubs as laborers made Kansas home, some eventually bringing their families. As these communities grew, many railroad families made their homes in old boxcars (one of which can be found in the newly remodeled Kansas Museum of History in Topeka.)
Hispanic immigrants brought their culture and traditions with them, teaching their children and their communities. The sharing of those ideas and traditions turned into community events that are still held today, including Fiesta Topeka, Community Mexican Fiesta in Garden City, and the Dia De Los Mu***os Festivals in Emporia, Topeka, and Kansas City. These celebrations allow all peoples to learn more about Hispanic culture and its impacts on the state.
This Hispanic Heritage Month, visit a festival, try a new authentic dish, and explore all the Hispanic and Latino nationalities across the state.
