Last Friday afternoon, the drought declaration for northeastern Massachusetts was relaxed from a critical drought to a significant drought. As a result, our water restrictions can be reduced from a total ban to our normal summer time restrictions.
Effective today, nonessential outdoor water use is limited to low intensity devices such as hand-held implements, drip irrigations systems, etc. used before 9 AM or after 5 PM when evaporation rates are lowest. The use of irrigation systems at anytime is strictly prohibited. Essential outdoor water use, including uses that have a health or safety impact, those required by regulation, or those needed to meet a core business function are permitted.
The restrictions apply to water customers and water customers with irrigation wells.
The Massachusetts Drought Management Task Force meets on a regular basis to monitor drought conditions and recommend any changes in drought status. Their next meeting will be in the first week of September. The restrictions will be in place until the drought declaration is altered or rescinded.
Please contact the Water Department if you have any questions.
