A Heartfelt Thank You from the J. Andrew Morrow First-Grade Team!
Our first-grade students have just officially wrapped up their Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) unit, “How My Body Works,” and we could not be prouder of their curiosity and hard work!
Throughout this unit, our young scientists explored five major body systems: the Muscular, Skeletal, Digestive, Circulatory, and Nervous systems. They learned how these systems function as a complicated network to keep us alive and well, zooming in on the critical roles of major organs, muscles, and bones. We also explored what it takes to keep our bodies running smoothly by discussing healthy food choices, the food pyramid, the truth about germs, the importance of regular exercise, and why we visit the doctor for check-ups.
To celebrate all of this amazing learning, we spent two incredible days participating in hands-on, culminating activities. Our classrooms turned into science labs where students:
Created their own model X-rays
Conducted a "spreading germs" experiment
Sculpted model arteries and veins using clay
Classified and categorized different types of food
Read medical "problem cards" to infer which body system was affected
None of this would have been possible without you. The first-grade students and teachers would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our wonderful families, community members, and local businesses. Your generous donations of supplies brought this unit to life and gave our students an unforgettable, hands-on learning experience.
