“Exercise is medicine for your body!”

That’s the advice Physical Therapist Erica Nesvig Paddock wants more people to hear.

After nearly 30 years as a PT, Erica still loves meeting people, hearing their stories and figuring out what may be behind pain or changes in mobility.

Her advice for aging well is simple: take a walk every day, keep practicing getting on and off the floor, and keep moving.

Erica especially enjoys helping older adults improve movement, balance and strength. And after three decades in the field, she says it’s the relationships that mean the most.

We’re celebrating Erica and our entire PT team during National Physical Therapy Month!

We're preparing for Halloween at Grand Traverse Pavilions and looking for donations to help make the day special for our residents.

At this time we could use some candy for our residents to pass out to the trick-or-treaters, if you have any extras we would be grateful for your support.

Every small contribution helps create a fun and memorable experience.

Questions? Reach out to the Activities team at 231-932-3053.

Getting out of a chair may seem simple, but it takes strength.

That same lower-body strength helps you get out of bed, climb stairs, get in and out of the car and stay independent as you age.

For our next Aging Well: Ask Our Experts tip, Jill Scharfenberger, PTA, recommends practicing the movement itself.

Sit in a sturdy chair and, if you can, stand up without using your hands. Slowly sit back down. Try 10 repetitions, rest, and repeat for 2 to 3 sets every other day.

It’s a simple way to build strength for the things you do every day.

If getting out of a chair is already difficult, our physical therapy team can help you find a safe place to start.

Don’t wait until something hurts to see a physical therapist.

That’s one thing Amy Coneset, PT, wishes more people knew. After 26 years as a physical therapist, Amy believes PT can be an important part of staying healthy and independent as we age.

Her advice? Start strength training. Building and maintaining muscle can help protect your mobility, and it’s never too late to begin.

At the Pavilions, Amy works with people at every stage, from outpatient therapy to short-term rehab and long-term care.

And she practices what she preaches! At age 49, Amy won the M22 Challenge in 2025. 💪

We’re proud to celebrate Amy during National Physical Therapy Month!
