📣 Team Update!

We’re thrilled to welcome Rebecca Sisco, who has been helping at Safe Harbor since 2021, to her new position of staff supervisor. We recently caught up with Rebecca to learn more about her experiences at the shelter, her passion for helping her fellow community members, and what she likes to do in her free time. Here's what she had to say about her work at the shelter:

"A single conversation with a guest who is struggling can begin to turn things around. To feel, in real time, the gratitude and heart-connection one human to another, is the most rewarding part of my job. Being able to serve this population in a way we are helping them to meet their very most basic needs is a close second."

Last week we kicked off traditional “regular” season by welcoming back our churches.
Last week, UUCGT kicked off the week with some amazing food, great conversation and lots of smiles. It feels good to have a full roster of volunteers back in the building

We also welcomed back the volunteers from 5 loaves 2 fish as well. They provide food every Monday to our guests, even in the summer. They are truly special !

Safe Harbor is now open on the weekends for our guests. This is a great time for our guests to rest for the upcoming week, get caught up on laundry and showers and just relax 😎

We're teaming up with Oryana Community Co-op this October! ❤️

Food Rescue director Taylor Moore loads up a pound of apples for Safe Harbor and other local food pantries as part of Wunsch Farms Pound-for-Pound Apple Donation Program.

Today’s cooler, rainy weather reminds us that fall is indeed here — and the Safe Harbor staff is ready for all that is ahead as we prepare for colder months and assisting guests throughout fall and winter. We also know the importance of going about our days with a smile, offering encouraging words to one another, and making sure there’s plenty of laughter, too!

Last week, Safe Harbor joined in volunteering at the Resilience Night down at Hull Park
It was an evening with filled stories, awareness and great music.

Also, a huge shout out to Babcia’s for their donation of pierogis to Safe Harbor after the event.

Finding Their Path 🧭

Over the last couple of months, a major operational shift has begun at Safe Harbor — one that is designed to put the “emergency” back into the emergency shelter.

That shift is the launch of a guest empowerment program, which aims to help those who have entered the shelter take a more active role in their path out.

In addition to serving individuals who have been staying at Safe Harbor for several months, the program is also targeting all new guests. It is centered around three components: an employment lab, a housing lab, and life-skills classes.
