Help children anticipate pressure, identify the internal battle, and decide what wisdom looks like ahead of time.

We’re not raising children who will never be tempted.

We’re raising children who know what to do when temptation comes.

As a leader and a parent, what pressure does your child need help preparing for before it arrives?

A child who regularly argues when hearing “no” may have difficulty accepting limits. A child who debates every instruction may be struggling with submission to authority.

A child who argues whenever corrected may have difficulty receiving feedback. These are bigger than individual behavior problems.

They’re tendencies of the heart that need training.

Few things wear parents down faster than arguing. Church leaders have an opportunity to help parents see these moments as an opportunity for discipleship.

When your child makes a mistake, how do you correct them without making them feel like they ARE the mistake?

There’s a big difference between guilt and shame:

Guilt says, “I did something wrong.”
Shame says, “Something is wrong with me.”

Healthy correction focuses on behavior, not identity.

Instead of, “You’re selfish,” say, “That choice was selfish.”

Instead of, “You’re dishonest,” say, “You didn’t tell the truth.”

The first leaves room for growth. The second can create a label.

Our goal isn’t to make children feel bad for their mistakes. It’s to help them recognize the wrong, take responsibility, make things right, and move forward wiser.

When you correct your child, are you addressing the behavior—or unintentionally defining who they are?

One of the most strategic shifts you can make as a parent is to stop relying primarily on external motivation and begin intentionally developing internal motivation in your child.

The goal of parenting isn’t simply to get children to cooperate today.

It’s to prepare them to make wise choices for themselves tomorrow.

If Your Kids Only Follow the Rules, You Haven’t Finished the Job.

Rules matter. They create order and boundaries. But the goal of parenting isn’t simply to raise children who obey when we’re watching.

It’s to help them develop **convictions** they can carry when we’re not there.

A rule says, “Tell the truth.”
A conviction says, “Honesty matters because trust matters.”

A rule says, “Be respectful.”
A conviction says, “People deserve to be treated with honor.”

Eventually, the rules will fade—curfews will end, screen limits will disappear, and we won’t always be there to enforce them.

What remains are the values they’ve made their own.

The goal isn’t just compliance.
It’s internal ownership—raising young adults who ask not only, “What am I allowed to do?” but “What is right, wise, loving, and responsible?”

What value are you intentionally helping your child move from a family rule into their heart?

Many church leaders have parents in their congregations who are raising children with ADHD. These parents are often exhausted and discouraged after trying countless strategies, yet the same struggles—impulsiveness, forgetfulness, emotional outbursts, and poor follow-through—continue.

A biblical, heart-based approach recognizes that ADHD is real and that neurological differences can affect attention, impulse control, and executive functioning. At the same time, it looks beyond behavior and addresses the heart, offering biblical and practical ways to help children grow.

Parents don’t need more guilt. They need hope—and the church can help provide it.
