The City of Trenton recognizes Fire Prevention Week, an annual observance dedicated to raising awareness about fire safety and educating residents on ways to prevent fires in their homes and communities. This year's theme, "Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower," highlights the importance of safely using and charging devices powered by lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are commonly found in everyday items such as cell phones, laptops, tablets, power tools, and electric scooters. While these batteries are convenient, improper charging, overheating, or physical damage can create serious fire hazards.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends several precautions to reduce the risk of battery-related fires:
-Use chargers and charging cables provided or approved by the device manufacturer.
-Charge devices on hard, flat surfaces, away from flammable materials such as bedding and furniture.
-Unplug devices once they are fully charged.
-Discontinue use of batteries that show signs of swelling, damage, or overheating.
-When possible, charge larger battery-powered equipment outdoors and keep exits clear.
Fire Prevention Week serves as an important reminder that fire safety begins with everyday decisions. By understanding potential hazards and practicing safe charging habits, residents can help reduce the risk of fires and protect their families and property.
