Even with my sneakers on, I could not keep up with the energy and excitement of the students celebrating their new, ADA-accessible playground at Bear Tavern Elementary School!

As a former physical education teacher and sponsor of New Jersey’s school recess law, I know that play helps children learn and grow physically, mentally, and socially. State funding helps school districts provide these opportunities while easing the burden on local property taxpayers.

Together with Assemblywoman Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson and Assemblyman Anthony S. Verrelli, I was proud to help secure funding for this accessible playground and for the district’s partnership with Attitudes in Reverse, whose AIR Dogs program supports students’ mental health. We also enjoyed meeting Nico, who joined us for a group photo!

Both investments help our children thrive!

Statement from Senator Shirley K. Turner on the Locust Street Shooting

My heart is with the families who are grieving the loss of their loved ones, with those who were injured, and with every Trenton resident shaken by this terrible act of violence. There comes a point when condolences alone are not enough. Our city needs peace, our neighborhoods need healing, and our families deserve to feel safe where they live.

Trenton cannot and should not be expected to confront violence of this magnitude alone. I am grateful that the New Jersey State Police, Mercer County law enforcement, Trenton Police Department, and neighboring communities have joined Trenton in responding to this tragedy. That same spirit of coordination must continue beyond the immediate investigation. City, county, and state government must work together to make sure that Trenton has the law-enforcement support, community resources, violence-prevention efforts, and other tools necessary to address both the immediate danger and the conditions that allow violence to take root.

Peace cannot be something we simply ask Trenton residents to hope for; it must be something all of us help build and protect. At the state level, I will continue to support efforts that bring the resources and partnerships our capital city needs. In the days ahead, I pray that we come together not only to mourn those we have lost, but to begin the deeper work of healing our streets, strengthening our communities, and preventing another family from having to experience this kind of pain.

This summer, I was pleased to welcome Lea-Jade Richards of Lawrenceville to my legislative office through the Legislative Black Caucus Foundation’s internship program.

A graduate of Princeton Day School and current student at Howard University, Lea-Jade gained firsthand experience in public service while participating in professional development, mentorship, public policy discussions, and career exploration.

Programs like this help prepare talented young people for leadership roles in their communities and beyond. Thank you, Lea-Jade, for spending your summer with us. I wish you continued success at Howard University and in all your future endeavors!

I was proud to join Lawrence Township officials and community leaders today to announce $2 million from the FY 2027 state budget for repairs and improvements to the Lawrence Township Community Center.

This investment will help move the Center closer to reopening as a safe, accessible and welcoming place for residents of all ages. It is time to put the community back in the Center!

Yesterday, I joined the New Jersey Department of Agriculture’s Urban Agriculture Legislative Tour in Trenton to see firsthand how local organizations are using urban agriculture to improve access to fresh nutritious food, strengthen neighborhoods, create economic opportunities, and build healthier, more resilient communities.

The tour included visits to Trent-Towne Market, Capital City Farm, and Isles’ urban agriculture sites at Tucker Street Garden and Chestnut Avenue, followed by a roundtable discussion at Mill One.

What I saw reinforced the importance of legislation I have introduced to expand urban agriculture and access to land throughout New Jersey. S3024 would provide funding to preserve urban land for agricultural and horticultural use and support stewardship projects on preserved land that improve soil health and climate resilience. S3351 would establish an Urban Gardening Pilot Program through the Department of Agriculture to provide grants for urban gardens in low-income communities and teach residents how to grow fresh produce.

These bills would help transform vacant and underutilized spaces into productive community assets while addressing food insecurity, building climate resilience, educating young people, and empowering residents. Urban cities and towns deserve to have grants to grow their own food.

Thank you to the Department of Agriculture and the community partners who welcomed us and shared their work. I appreciated the opportunity to hear directly from local leaders about how the state can help sustain and expand these important efforts.
