Farm to School in action at Ocean Road Elementary!

During Jersey Fresh Farm to School Week, we visited Ocean Road Elementary to learn about their Grow Together Initiative and Outdoor Education Center, an impressive example of what can happen when a school community grows together.

The Outdoor Education Center is a multi-sensory learning space where students can experience the science of growing food firsthand. The Green Team shared how they’ve worked with teachers across every grade level to connect the outdoor classroom to existing curriculum. The space will also includes garden murals created through art, an outdoor chalkboard built as an Eagle Scout project, and picnic tables that can accommodate up to 80 students for outdoor learning.

We toured the garden and enjoyed a delicious taste of tomatoes and mozzarella made with produce grown right at the school. The cafeteria also incorporates food grown at school into Tasty Tuesdays, along with local farm products.

From the Green Team and teachers to students, the cafeteria and community, Ocean Road is showing the power of collaboration to bring classroom, cafeteria and garden together.

Jersey Fresh Farm to School Week brought us to School 28 in Elizabeth!

Fresh fruits and vegetables are at the heart of learning at School 28. Through the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, students explore a variety of fresh foods while learning about what they’re eating and where it comes from.

That learning continues in the school’s teaching gardens, where students grow vegetables, fruit trees, perennial berries, herbs and tea plants, while also learning about pollinators and composting.

With help from the school community, students harvest what they grow and take part in preparing vegetables for taste tests — connecting the experience from garden to table.

We loved seeing Farm to School come to life at School 28!

Kicking off Jersey Fresh Farm to School Week!

We celebrated at Burlington County Special Services School District with a ribbon cutting for Pioneer Fresh — a new program helping students grow, prepare, and experience fresh food in hands-on ways.

The program includes a new school garden and indoor hydroponic growing, giving students the opportunity to take part from seed to plate. For students with extensive food aversions, these experiences can create new opportunities to explore foods in a supportive, meaningful way.

And what better way to celebrate than by tasting the harvest? Students made fresh tomato and cantaloupe bruschetta using produce grown in their garden and served it to the school community.

Today, we’re shining a spotlight on Lima Family Farms in Hillsborough!

This family owned farm raises grass-fed beef, pastured pork and poultry, and free-range eggs, while also connecting students and the community to agriculture through farm visits.

Farms like Lima Family Farms help bring Farm to School from the farm to the classroom and cafeteria!

Just in time for the new school year, we’re bringing back our Farmer Friday series and celebrating the farmers and agricultural educators who help connect New Jersey students and communities to agriculture.

Today, we’re shining a spotlight on Muddy Paws Farm Rescue! 🐐🐓🐖

Muddy Paws provides a forever home for rescued farm animals while creating opportunities for students to learn through hands-on experiences. Their school field trips give students the chance to meet rescued animals, explore the farm, and discover the natural world along the Rancocas Creek.

What better way to kick off a new school year than with a reminder that learning can happen beyond the classroom, and sometimes, it has four legs! To find out more: https://www.muddypawsfarmrescue.org/
