The Fishers Peak Summit is now closed for peregrine falcon nesting through July 31st. There are still over 13 miles of trail open in the park for hiking and mountain biking!
Keep your eyes peeled while in the park and you might spot falcons soaring or hear them calling out. They've been returning to the peak for many years to hatch and raise their eyasses (baby falcons).
Please respect the closure to help us protect this vital habitat.

While the hiker was found safe, this incident is an important reminder to stay on marked trails and to plan outdoor activities with consideration for weather, communications, and food and water requirements.
Leaving the trail can make it extremely difficult if not impossible to locate you in the case of emergency. Please, stay on established trails that are explicitly marked for hiking, cycling, and future equestrian use.
FPSP staff would like to thank our community partners at the Las Animas County Sheriff's Department, the Fishers Peak Fire Protection District, and Hoehne Fire Protection District for their commitment to the public and ongoing assistance at the park.

Contract trail crews are still working hard to complete approximately 10 new miles of trail at Fishers Peak, which we hope to open in mid-2026. We want to thank them for their efforts contending with remote and steep terrain, brisk mornings, wildlife encounters, storms and fog.
These new trails will largely be multi-use and link into the existing trail system for new options. The project also includes our first equestrian trails, which will have a separate trailhead with trailer parking and a corral.

With all the moisture this summer we are still seeing wildflowers around the peak. Some, like this wild bergamot, are blooming later than their typical season.
Wild bergamot has no relation to the citrus bergamot, but it does have medicinal properties and has a long history of use by indigenous peoples. "Bee balm," as it is known colloquially, has been used in a poultice as a first aid antiseptic, in a tea to treat mouth and throat infections, as a stimulant, and even as a method to alleviate flatulence!
Bergamot is a "honey plant" meaning it is particularly useful for honey production and is often swarmed by pollinators.

Progress continues on the newest additions to the Fishers Peak State Park trail system! As a reminder, if you see trail crews or new trails on the park, please leave them be for now. We're hoping to open these trails to the public spring/summer of 2026.
