Since 2011, the City of Waverly and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach-Bremer County have partnered with the Waverly Community Sharing Garden and Orchard. This year we grew and donated 14,258 pounds of fresh and nutritious produce for area food-insecure families. Located on portions of two city blocks ruined by the 2008 Cedar River Flood, our total output now is over 131,000 pounds (65 tons). Thanks to great volunteers, especially the Waverly Exchange Club.

Come to the Tripoli High School this Saturday from 9-11:30am for the the craft and vender show and while there receive free Radon test kits. We're partnering with Lindley Sharp of the Bremer County Health Department to help test both rural and urban homes for radon levels. It is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. It's an invisible radioactive gas formed in the soil in northern areas, and Iowa homes tested show 5 of 7 exceeding the mediation level. Lindley Sharp is also a former Bremer 4-H'er and her mother was once a 4-H Leader.

The joint Black Hawk/Bremer ISU Extension Master Conservationist class learned about how the denitrifying bioreactor on Crane Creek near Tripoli has been reducing tile water nitrate levels by 70+% since 2014. They later met with coordinators from the Upper Wapsie, Middle Cedar watersheds on efforts to control farm nutrients lost from their areas.

In observance of Labor Day, the Bremer County Extension Office will be closed on Monday, September 7th, 2026.

On Thursday evening, September 3rd, Black Hawk and Bremer County ISU Extensions hosted a class from the ISU Master Conservationist program at Sweets Marsh by Tripoli. This class on Aquatic Environments is one of 7 weekly in-person features in the series. Here Jason Auel of the Iowa DNR shares how they manage this large area and water levels for migrating waterfowl. Also Bremer County Conservation Director Andy Hockenson shared that while our county is smaller than many, it ranks #5 of 99 in Iowa for amount of county park and nature acres---neighboring Black Hawk ranks 2nd, The Wapsipinicon River and Wapsie Greenbelt are major nature areas. We suggested that visitors use head nets against insect pests. Only one had ever been there , but most want to come back. The large informational signs and scope are popular to view some of thousands of waterfowl during the migration.
