It has come to the attention of the Smith County Elections Office that some voters have raised questions regarding whether ballots may contain official markings prior to the ballot being handed to the voter.
Ballots are required by Texas law (Texas Election Code §§ 85.0311 & 62.008) to have both a serial number AND the initials of the early voting clerk at the early voting locations OR a signature of the presiding judge for the election day locations.
Smith County Elections Administrator Michelle Allcon explains that every ballot has a serial number on it before it comes to her office. On the day of voting, the early voting clerk or election day judge is initialing or stamping the initials on each ballot before handing it to the voter.

While Holiday in the Country is the kickoff for our town for the holiday shopping season, another event that many other small businesses capitalize on is Small Business Saturday on Nov. 28th.

Small Business Saturday is held annually on the Saturday following Thanksgiving, encouraging shoppers to support their local mom and pop shops and neighborhood businesses. It was actually founded in the recession of 2010 by American Express to help local businesses attract holiday shoppers. It helps balance the corporate push of Black Friday and Cyber Monday by putting money directly back into our local economies.

Small businesses make up 99% of all businesses.

Small businesses are encouraged to -
Invest in the customer experience of shopping small - Offer festive touches, seasonal refreshments, things that big-box competitors cannot copy.

It’s important for cities to work together with their local businesses to promote the big shopping days. Around 90% of shoppers plan to spend in at least one major retail sale event this holiday season, due to promotions and can’t-miss events.

Stats from Quickbooks show 1 in 3 shoppers desire to avoid crowded or busy big retail stores during the holiday shopping season, which motivates them to shop small.

It’s key to remember that being small is a selling point.

Do you try to shop small during the holidays?
