WICKED FAST 5K EVENT CANCELLATION NOTICE

Out of an abundance of caution, we have made the difficult decision to cancel this evening’s 5K due to the unpredictable nature of the impending weather and the potential for changing conditions.

The safety of our participants, volunteers and staff is our top priority. While we are disappointed that we won’t be gathering for this event, we believe this is the most responsible decision for our community.

Thank you for your understanding and flexibility. We appreciate everyone who planned to participate, volunteer, and help make this event possible. Participants, the Parks and Recreation team will be in touch next week with more information. Stay safe. 💚

PARENTS: E-BIKES & E-MOTOS — KNOW THE DIFFERENCE

Electric bikes and e-motos are becoming increasingly popular with young riders, but not everything marketed or referred to as an “e-bike” is legally a bicycle.

Under current North Carolina law, an electric-assisted bicycle generally must have operable pedals, a motor of no more than 750 watts, and a motor-powered maximum speed of 20 mph.

Electric dirt-bike-style machines capable of much higher speeds fall under motorcycle laws instead. If so, operating them on public streets can require a driver's license/motorcycle endorsement, registration, insurance, and required safety equipment.

Before purchasing one for your child, check:
• Motor wattage and top speed
• Whether it has functional pedals
• Whether it is legal for street use
• Whether a license, registration, or insurance is required

Some e-motos can reach 40–60+ mph and should not be treated like bicycles.

Know what you're buying, where it can legally be ridden, and make sure your child has the proper safety equipment.

On 09/24/2026 at around 6:00 pm, officers with the Troutman Police Department responded to a report on Sugar Hill Road involving a 15-year-old juvenile who had allegedly taken his mother’s vehicle from Catawba County and traveled to his father’s residence in Troutman.

According to information obtained during the investigation, the juvenile forced entry into the residence and then forced open a locked closet, where he allegedly took a handgun.

The juvenile’s mother later advised officers that her son had returned to her residence in Catawba County. She expressed concern about returning to the residence because the juvenile was believed to possibly have the fi***rm.

Juvenile Justice was contacted regarding the incident and advised that the circumstances did not meet the requirements for a secure custody order.

Troutman Police Department officers contacted the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office and provided the information obtained during the investigation. Deputies responded to the Catawba County residence to follow up on the report. During the investigation, events led to an officer-involved shooting incident. No deputies were injured, and the juvenile is currently hospitalized.

The Troutman Police Department will be seeking juvenile petitions for Breaking and Entering and Larceny of a Fi***rm through the juvenile court system. Any requests for information regarding the officer-involved shooting should be directed to the Catawba County Sheriff's Office.
