ATTENTION TREECE ROAD AREA: There will be a marathon and ultra marathon running event in the area of Valencia and Treece Roads next Saturday (10/24/2026) and Sunday (10/25/2026). The Show Me Your Free State Marathon and Ultra Marathon event is reportedly going to begin as early as 4:00 AM on Saturday and run continuously through mid-morning Sunday. Some of this race will occur during night-time hours, the runners should be wearing reflective gear and headlamps. The Marathon is not associated with Doniphan County Emergency Management or any other Doniphan County Office. We just want to make sure that residents and others in the area are aware of the additional foot traffic that will be on the roadways during that time. As always, our goal is to keep everyone as safe as possible. If you are driving in this area during the event, please use caution and be aware of the potential for runners. The runners should only be on Valencia and Treece Roads, all other routes should have normal traffic. Event organizers recommend that residents as well as others support and encourage the runners as they pass by. A map of the course and an informational brochure from the event organizer are included with this post.

The BURN BAN FOR DONIPHAN COUNTY HAS BEEN LIFTED. The winds are forecasted to be calming, and hopefully will stay that way for a few days.

Anthony Rolfe of Smithton Lodge #1 gave a presentation during the Highland City counsel meeting which provided information to community leaders regarding the various programs available through the Lodge and Foundation.These programs cover a wide variety of efforts to include college scholarships, essay contests, exemplary Educator and Student recognition awards, local projects and the community grants program. At the conclusion of the briefing a check for $500 was presented to the Highland City Counsel in support of this years Trunk or Treat event.

PUBLIC NOTICE – FULL-SCALE HAZARDOUS MATERIALS EXERCISE

Atchison County will be conducting a Full-Scale Hazardous Materials Exercise on Wednesday, October 14th, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

The exercise will involve multiple local emergency response agencies and healthcare partners. Its purpose is to evaluate emergency response capabilities, including interagency coordination, communications, hazardous materials response, patient care, public information, and incident command.

Exercise activities will take place in the areas of Gasoline Alley, Atchison County Health Department, and Amberwell Hospital.

Residents may notice an increased presence of emergency vehicles, first responders, and other exercise-related activity during this time.

This is only an exercise. There is no actual emergency.

We appreciate the public's patience and understanding as our local agencies work together to strengthen our preparedness for real-world emergencies.
