Capital Roots Grow, Educate, Provide.

Capital Roots (formerly Capital District Community Gardens) is a non-profit organization that works to reduce the impact of poor nutrition on public health in New York's Capital Region. We organize community gardens, improve access to healthy food, offer nutrition and horticulture education for all ages and coordinate urban greening programs in Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady and southern Saratoga counties.

🌳 This fall, Capital Roots’ Urban Forestry team is planting 147 trees across the Capital Region to help communities grow greener, healthier neighborhoods.

In Mechanicville, we'll plant 73 trees around the city where they will provide shade, support wildlife, and create opportunities for community learning.

We’re also celebrating one of the biggest years for the Free Street Tree Program! More than 40 trees are planned through the program this season. Did you know residents and businesses in eligible areas can apply for a free tree planting?

Our Produce Project students from Troy High School are helping nourish communities across the Capital Region!

Last week, they teamed up with our Squash Hunger team to prepare packages of fresh, local produce for food pantries and community organizations throughout the region. The experience also helps students build connections with their communities as they prepare for life after high school.

This week, our Squash Hunger team and volunteers partnered with Schoharie Valley Farms and Barber's Farm to glean more than 2,700 pounds of local squash, pumpkins, eggplant and peppers!

Gleaning, or harvesting extra produce, helps reduce food waste and gets fresh, local produce to food pantries, shelters, and community organizations across the Capital Region.
