In its “Good News” segment last evening the City Council honored several citizens who went above and beyond. Edward Spain, Maddy McLaren and Katie Spain McLaren were recognized for restoring an historic horse trough dating back to the 1800s at the corner of Peoples and 15th; Michelle Miner for her years of planting seasonal flowers in the trough; and Jennifer Schulaner for organizing a free library in Beman Park that is a replica of Garnet Baltimore’s childhood home. Together these residents exemplify being good neighbors, caring about their neighborhood. Stepping up without being asked and taking on a challenge that will be enjoyed by many. Thanks to all!

Troy suffered a terrible tragedy with the fatal fire that has devastated a family. It’s an unimaginable loss. The City Council is so grateful to our brave firefighters, first responders and mutual aid partners who tried to save the victims. We take this opportunity to encourage folks to check their smoke detectors and contribute to the gofundme if possible. Troy is a close and caring community. We care about each other.

New York State announced by Governor Hochul that a prior award to Troy of $11.1 million is being converted to a grant to the city for Lead Service Line replacement.
This means in the last three years NYS has delivered over $33 million to help jumpstart Troy’s lead service line replacement program. Thousands of lead lines are pending replacement, with the status of thousands more still unknown. We applaud the Governor Hochul and Assemblymember McDonald for their commitment to protecting the health and well-being of Troy residents and families, and look forward to seeing more progress toward this critical effort. Of course, the funding would never have available to us were it not for the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill led by former President Biden and our own US Senator Chuck Schumer.
