Have you ever wondered about Old Tashua Tree Farm? Conservation Commission member Alex got curious and found out more.

When Dwight Fuller's Dairy Farm was put on the market in 1950, Mr. John Eckart bought the 53 acre property. That year he planted his first 5000 trees and opened a chicken farm to raise money to further develop his tree farm.

Seven years later, the Eckarts sold eight trees to friends and in 1958, began sales to the public, operating as Tashua Christmas Tree Farm.

The varieties of trees grown on the farm included Blue Spruce, White Spruce, Black Hills Spruce, Concolor Fir, Balsam Fir, Fraser Fir, Douglas Fir, Scotch Pines, and White Pines.

Between 1950 and 1972 Mr. Eckart planted ash sold at least 65, 000 trees on his farm. Shoppers were welcome to pack a picnic lunch and spend the day wandering through the pine and spruce covered hills of Tashua Christmas Tree Farm.

In 1960, Tashua Tree Farm was added to the American Tree Farm System under the Connecticut Tree Farm Committee. (Image of Tree Farm membership seal)

The tree farm operated until 1998 and was purchased by the town of Trumbull in 2002. The farm to day includes 35.61 acres of Town Open Space.

Images include a Tashua Christmas Tree Farm ad from the Connecticut Post in 1969 and a photo of tree shoppers with John Eckert in 1972.
