Here is a look at potential wind gusts from 6 PM Thursday to 5 PM Saturday (REFS model) for the Tucson Metro & all of southeast Arizona.

Expect localized wind gusts of 55-75 mph for locales downwind (west/northwest) of mountain ranges Friday. A High Wind Warning is in effect.

🌵🤠Secure those Outdoor Items Today!

This is not the typical wind event we see impacting Southeast Arizona. This one will be significant due to the stable air just above the mountains funneling the winds back down the leeward side of the higher terrain. Attached is a graphic to help explain why we are expecting winds on the other side of the terrain instead of those locations being blocked like we see in normal east wind events.

There is a 50-80% probability of winds in excess of 70 mph (HREF and REFS) hugging locations immediately to the W/NW of the higher terrain. This scenario may result in sustained damaging winds to those locations and should be taken very seriously. This is an anomalously strong event! Those with wind-vulnerable property should take the necessary precautions and secure their items. Although the strongest winds may be focused immediately downstream of the higher terrain, terrain gaps and east-west oriented valleys will also be susceptible to strong winds given the magnitude and duration of the low-level pressure gradient.

A High Wind Warning is in effect from 11 PM MST this evening through 11 PM MST Friday from eastern Pima County eastward. A Wind Advisory will then be in effect from 11 PM MST Friday through 2 PM MST Saturday afternoon.

Expect east to southeast winds 30-45 mph with gusts 50-70 mph. These winds could lead to downed trees and power poles as well as areas of blowing dust. High profile vehicles should also exercise caution when driving in strong cross-winds.

A strong backdoor front will move across Southeast Arizona from the east Thursday night into Saturday. A High Wind Warning is now in effect for much of the area for the potential for wind gusts to exceed 60 mph.

The strongest winds will be immediately west-to-northwest or downstream of the higher terrain and in terrain gaps.

Winds remain strong with a somewhat lower potential for 60+ mph winds on Saturday, thus a Wind Advisory will be in effect with diminishing but remaining breezy through the late afternoon and evening.

🌵A strong backdoor front will move across Southeast Arizona from the east Thursday night into Saturday. Expect east to southeast winds 30-35 mph with gusts 50-60 mph.

The strongest winds will be immediately west-to-northwest or downstream of the higher terrain and in terrain gaps. This is a particularly strong system that has the potential to produce wind gusts in excess of 60 mph.

Those with outdoor plans or activities on both Friday and Saturday should take necessary precautions for the wind.

🌵🌧Mostly cloudy with a few afternoon breezes across the majority of Southeast Arizona today. Scattered light showers tracking through the area will weaken this morning, with another slight chance for showers tracking from west to east across the region this afternoon. Rainfall will not be impactful today.

All eyes are still on the potential wind event late this week as a strong surface high pushes south along the southern Rockies, then into the area from the east. There has been a lot of consistency amongst weather models with this feature producing strong east to southeast winds across the majority of Southeast Arizona both Friday and Saturday.

A Wind Advisory is in effect for portions of Southeast Arizona from 11 PM MST Thursday night into 11 AM MST Saturday. This wind event may be impactful to the numerous outdoor events planned this weekend.

Expect east to southeast winds 30 to 35 mph with gusts 50-60 mph Friday into Saturday morning. The strongest winds may be focused immediately downstream of the higher terrain, and along terrain gaps and east-west oriented valleys Friday morning.

🌵🌧Partly cloudy and breezy (southwest winds 15-25 mph with gusts to 35 mph) today across the majority of Southeast Arizona with a chance of showers tracking west to east across the area mainly tonight into Tuesday.

The more impactful weather for Southeast Arizona will be late this week into this weekend as a strong surface high pressure area backs into the area from the east/northeast, resulting in strong to very strong ELY/SELY winds.

There is high confidence in breezy to windy conditions Friday and Saturday, but low-to-moderate confidence at this time for very strong winds.

At this time, the strongest winds are expected Friday morning hugging the lee-side (in this case the west side) of the higher terrain and those favored east-to-southeast aligned mountain gaps, but may also be present Saturday morning as well.
