The Arizona Probation Officers Association is deeply saddened by the death of Parole Agent Joshua Byrd, killed in the line of duty.
On July 17 at approximately 12:50 p.m., Agent Byrd was shot inside an Oakland parole office. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. A suspect has been detained by the Oakland Police Department.
Agent Byrd, 40, joined CDCR as a cadet in June 2014. After serving as a correctional officer (promoted to correctional sergeant in 2020) at the California Medical Facility, he joined DAPOโs Oakland office as a parole agent in Oct. 2024.
He leaves behind a wife and three children.
May Officer Byrdโs service and sacrifice always be remembered.

A Tempe Police Officer by day & beauty queen by night, Officer Candace Kanavel, and former Miss Arizona USA 2023, has worn many hats โ including a crown!
Candace works on patrol, specializes as a Crisis Intervention Trained Officer and plays a pivotal role as a Hostage Negotiator for the SWAT Team. Last year, she made history as the first police officer to compete at the Miss USA competition.
Beyond her law enforcement and pageant duties, Candace is the driving force behind the initiative, "Yes She CAN," dedicated to instilling confidence and capability in women through essential safety skills. Candace uses her platform to travel the country sharing her story and encouraging others through her message: you can be anything AND everything you want to be!

Rest In Peace: Detective Ryan So ๐๐
It is with an unbelievably heavy heart we announce that Detective Ryan So #1473 has succumbed to duty-related injuries sustained earlier this evening and has passed away. Detective So honorably served the City of Scottsdale and the Scottsdale Police Department for 9 years and ended his watch as a member of the Special Assignments Unit. Detective So also served in the United States Navy. This is an unimaginable tragedy for both Ryanโs family and his police family at SPD. Our thoughts and prayers are with Detective Soโs family, his team, and everyone across our police department.
