Yesterday, the Pascua Yaqui Tribal Council and City of Tucson council members, along with community leaders, met at the Richey Resource Center to discuss new working partnerships to address the needs of Yaqui communities in and around Tucson.

Participants included Vice Mayor Lane Santa Cruz, Ward 5 Councilmember Selina Barajas, Audra of the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, Local First Arizona, and other community partners.

The visit focused on strengthening partnerships and exploring opportunities to expand services and ensure access to vital resources, including food assistance and community support programs at Richey.

We look forward to continued collaboration with the City of Tucson and our community partners as we work together to serve and uplift our community.

Today, Chairman Julian Hernandez stood in solidarity with Tribal leaders, elected officials, and community partners to oppose the proposed closure of the Tucson Area Indian Health Service (IHS) Office.

Alongside Representative Adelita Grijalva, Tohono O’odham Chairman Verlon Jose, Vice Chairwoman Carla Johnson, Tucson Vice Mayor Lane Santa Cruz, Tucson Indian Center Executive Director Jacob Bernal, and Dr. Theresa Cullen, leaders emphasized the critical role the Tucson Area Office plays in supporting Tribal health systems and communities.

Speakers raised serious concerns about potential service disruptions, lack of meaningful Tribal consultation, and the need to uphold the federal trust responsibility to Tribal Nations.

The Pascua Yaqui Tribe stands united in calling for the Tucson Area Office to remain intact and for any decisions to move forward only after full consultation and clear protections for Tribal communities.
