Summer is here! RMFD reminds you to practice the ABCs of water safety throughout the year. Here are some tips to keep you safe in and around the pool this summer:
Learn the ABCs of Water Safety! Drownings can occur in a split second and can happen silently. We want to remind everyone that drowning prevention should be practiced year-round in Arizona—not just during the warmer months. Here are a few tips to ensure that we are keeping our kids safe in and around water.
A – Active Adult Supervision. Always watch your child in and around water. This includes pools, bath tubs, etc. Assign a designated child watcher and remove all distractions such as cellular phones or anything that may draw attention away from the pool or tub. Do not leave buckets of water unattended and install safety devices on toilets. Toddlers could potentially fall head first into these hazards and may not have the strength to pull themselves out.
B – Barriers. Install approved safety fencing around pools and spas to isolate them from the house and play areas. Check the safety features of the barrier regularly to ensure that they are in working order and be sure to keep fencing clear of objects that kids can climb on to get over the fence.
C – Classes – CPR classes for the adults, swimming lessons for the kids. Children depend on you to be their first responder! Learning CPR and how to react in a drowning situation can make the difference between life and death. Contact your local American Red Cross or American Heart Association for CPR class schedules. Enroll children in swimming classes with qualified instructors. Understand that lessons do not make kids “drown-proof.”
Remember – Drownings are preventable - Children Aren’t Waterproof!

May is National Bicycle Safety Month. Rural Metro Fire would like to share some tips for drivers and bicyclists to raise awareness and promote safety on the streets:
• Bicycles are vehicles and are required to follow the same rules of the road as drivers.
• When driving, look for bicyclists and, as always, avoid distracted driving.
• Drivers should maintain a safe distance when encountering bicycles on the road.
• Always wear your helmet when riding your bike. Helmets save lives!
• Wear high visibility clothing and install the proper lights so you are easier to see.
• Ride in the same direction as traffic, obey street signs and road markings. Avoid distracted riding and concentrate on the road ahead!
