Magical Lantern Festivals Light Up Japan 🌟
In August, rivers across Japan shimmer with the gentle glow of floating lanterns during Tōrō Nagashi (灯籠流し), a moving summer ritual in which families honor the spirits of their ancestors.
Delicate paper lanterns, often inscribed with heartfelt messages, are set adrift on the water, symbolically guiding ancestral souls back to the spirit realm after their brief return home during Japan’s Buddhist festival of Obon. More than a ceremony of remembrance, Tōrō Nagashi is a communal gesture of peace, memory, and quiet release, a luminous farewell echoing across dark waters, both personal and universal. At Yume Japanese Gardens, this beautiful tradition holds a special place in our hearts. We invite you once again to take part in two special Tōrō Nagashi evenings, an opportunity to reflect and remember together.
This fall, join us for two special Tōrō Nagashi evenings on November 14 & 15 from 6 pm - 8 pm

🎏 Kodomo no Hi — Children’s Day 🎏
Today, May 5th, Japan celebrates Kodomo no Hi, a cherished national holiday honoring the health, happiness, and growth of children. Families mark the occasion by flying vibrant carp streamers (koinobori) and displaying samurai dolls—symbols of strength, perseverance, and hope for the next generation.
At Yume Japanese Gardens, our own koinobori dance joyfully in the spring breeze, echoing these timeless wishes. As they flutter above the paths, we pause to reflect with gratitude on the beauty of the 2024–25 season here at Yume. Thank you for walking alongside us through another year of quiet wonder and cultural connection.
We now gently close our gates for the summer, carrying with us the spirit of this joyful day. Until we meet again in the fall.
