Here's why Chair Allen supports a 120-day data center moratorium.

Yesterday, the Pima County Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 Tuesday to pause new data center development for 120 days. The pause applies to companies or developers that have not yet submitted permit applications for site improvements, such as grading, paving, flood control or construction.

The moratorium is part of a broader effort that also includes proposed permanent changes to development codes and a recent Pima County Health Department review of potential public health impacts associated with data centers. Pima County Development Services is seeking public comment on proposed changes to the Zoning Code that govern data centers. [Take the survey: https://engage.zencity.io/engagepimacounty/en-US/engagements/0fd4caaa-a6e5-422f-8154-1ef87545638f]

County Administrator Jan Lesher Monday sent a memo to the Board of Supervisors with a draft of the proposed changes to Title 18 of the Zoning Code. The changes are scheduled to go before the Planning and Zoning Commission Oct. 28. In anticipation of that, Development Services is seeking input from the public.

The Board of Supervisors is considering a moratorium on data center development at its meeting Sept. 22 to give time to developing zoning code changes for data centers for their consideration at a meeting later this fall.

Development Services has published an online survey that asks the public to rank the importance of areas in the code under consideration, and it will hold an open house Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the basement of the Public Works Building, 201 N. Stone Ave. It will host a forum online in October as well, though details for that are still being finalized.

The proposed regulatory framework for data centers would:

- Define data centers
- Establish a development review process
- Provide development standards
- Provide design standards
- Require applicants to conduct noise studies and mitigation
- Require compliance with the Conservation Lands Systems

The open house will have copies of the code change proposal and other information. The public will be able to review the changes and make comments or ask questions.

Development Services is asking for feedback about what the public is most concerned about when it comes to data centers, the types of code protections they think are most important, and what types of mitigation methods the County should require.

The survey link can be found on the department’s website, pima.gov/land-planning-regulation, or the public can send an email to [email protected].

Last Saturday, our office had the pleasure of attending the 2026 Annual Meeting of the Friends of the Arivaca Schoolhouse & Historic Townsite🏛️

For the past 10 years, this amazing group has worked tirelessly to educate the public about the historical significance of the Arivaca Schoolhouse and Historic Townsite.

We learned about their efforts to renovate the kitchen and the latest updates from Radio Station 97.7 KVAC. We also enjoyed learning about how Arivaca came to be, based on in-depth research by former Arivaca librarian Mary Kasulaitis. 📚

The Arivaca Schoolhouse is the oldest standing schoolhouse in Arizona and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.

Thank you to the members of the community for keeping this special place open, vibrant, and connected to our shared history.

Visit Arivaca! 🌵

Yesterday, District 3 joined around 75 community members in Sahuarita at a rally protesting the construction of a 200‑acre data center at the corner of West Sahuarita Road and South La Cañada Drive. Our office continues working alongside residents in defense of our valuable air, water, and the beauty of the Sonoran desert.

Twenty-five years later, we remember September 11, 2001 — a day that shook our nation and left an enduring loss for thousands of families.

We honor the 2,977 lives taken and the firefighters, police officers, paramedics, military members, city workers, and everyday heroes who stepped forward in a moment of unimaginable tragedy.

We also remember the compassion and unity that followed — neighbors helping neighbors and a nation standing together.

Today, we remember, we honor, and we won’t forget.
