Students Gain Practical First-Aid Experience During Governor’s Summer Challenge

Medical Professionals from the New Mexico Army National Guard Medical Detachment provided hands-on first-aid instruction to students participating in the Governor’s Summer Challenge Program at Kennedy Middle School on June 17, 2026.

Students rotated through training stations covering bleeding control, tourniquet application, manual blood pressure measurement and basic injury management, gaining practical skills that could help them respond during emergencies.

The training was conducted in support of the Governor’s Summer Challenge Program and its cadre members, Army National Guard Sgt. Brandy Valenzuela, a medic with the Office of the State Surgeon, and Sgt. Justice Koren, a motor transport operator with the 1115th Transportation Company, who lead daily operations at Kennedy Middle School. Air National Guard Staff Sgt. Enrique Quesada and U.S. Army Pfc. Myra Ortega, with Drug Demand Reduction Outreach (DDRO), also supported the event.

DDRO was back in action at Alameda Elementary School! 🚨 We had the opportunity to speak with 4th and 5th graders about the dangers of va**ng, breaking down the facts about ni****ne, how it affects the developing brain, and why addiction can start at a young age. Our goal is to equip students with the knowledge and life skills they need to make smart decisions and protect their future. Investing in our youth today means stronger, healthier communities tomorrow. 💪🇺🇸

DDRO was proud to partner with LCPD, DEA, and the Unified Prevention Coalition for today’s Drug Take Back event.

Working together, we’re helping keep our communities safe by providing a way to properly dispose of unused and expired medications.

Events like this are a powerful reminder that prevention starts with all of us. Thank you to everyone who came out and did their part! 💊🇺🇸 communitystrong
