Volunteer fire departments across America are facing one of their greatest challenges: finding enough people willing and able to serve.

Volunteers must balance emergency calls with jobs, family responsibilities, training and everyday life.

A department may have many names on its roster, but what matters during an emergency is how many trained firefighters are available when the alarm goes off.

Every new volunteer strengthens the department and improves the community's emergency-response capability. Will you be that one for your community? Please support America’s VFDs.

The New Mexico state forester is rescinding statewide fire restrictions in response to recent rains which have reduced the threat of wildfire across the state.

“Late season precipitation has helped to alleviate wildfire spread,” said State Forester Laura McCarthy. “While fire restrictions are lifting, the public should continue to be vigilant about preventing human-caused wildfires, especially when conducting fall agricultural burns and at hunting camps.”

Since Sept. 1, New Mexico has seen 236% of average rainfall for the month, though year-to date precipitation still remains far below average. Since Jan. 1, more than 1,700 wildfires have burned more than 189,000 acres across New Mexico. San Juan, Catron and Rio Arriba counties sustained the highest concentrations of fires.

This year, intense dry lightning storms dropped the percentage of human-caused wildfires from the average of 90% to 70% of wildfires in the state. Humans commonly started wildfires this year in three ways: equipment use, such as working outside with welding or cutting tools; debris burning; and hot ash disposal.

Human-caused wildfires are always preventable. You can avoid accidentally starting the next wildfire by following these prevention steps: always use and maintain spark arresters and clear a noncombustible work zone when working outside; burn debris only when the weather is favorable; and always drown ashes to cool them completely before disposing of them safely.

OFFICE OF THE FIRE CHIEF

PUBLIC NOTICE

September 28, 2026

BURN BAN LIFTED WITHIN TUCUMCARI CITY LIMITS

Effective September 28, 2026, the burn ban previously in effect within the City of Tucumcari is hereby LIFTED.

This action follows the lifting of burn restrictions by the State of New Mexico and Quay County. Based on the change in current restrictions, the City of Tucumcari will likewise discontinue its burn ban within city limits.
Residents are reminded that the lifting of the burn ban does not eliminate the need to follow applicable City ordinances and fire-safety requirements. Anyone conducting lawful outdoor burning should continue to use extreme caution, maintain appropriate supervision and extinguishing equipment, and ensure that all fires are completely extinguished when finished.

Anyone wishing to burn shall inform the dispatch center at (575)461-2280

Tucumcari Fire Rescue will continue to monitor local fire conditions. Should conditions deteriorate and an increased wildfire threat develop, restrictions may be reinstated as necessary to protect life and property.

Thank you to the citizens of Tucumcari for your cooperation during the burn ban and for your continued commitment to fire safety.

PUBLIC NOTICE – FIRE HYDRANT TESTING

Tucumcari Fire Rescue has contracted with Waterway of New Mexico to conduct fire hydrant testing throughout the city limits this week.
During testing, residents may temporarily notice discolored or cloudy water coming from their faucets. This is a normal occurrence caused by changes in water flow stirring up naturally occurring sediment within the water lines.
There is no need for alarm. The discoloration is temporary, and the water should clear up as the system settles.
If you experience discolored water, allow your cold water to run for several minutes until it becomes clear.
Hydrant testing is an important part of ensuring our hydrants and water supply are ready and functioning properly when they are needed during an emergency.
We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while we complete this important testing.

𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭

The sirens are quiet now.
The scene is cleared.
The reports are written.
The radios finally stop talking.

And for a moment…
they just sit there.

A firefighter staring at soot-covered gloves.
A medic replaying the call in silence.
A dispatcher hearing voices that never fully leave.
A police officer too exhausted to explain the weight of the night.

Not fearless.
Not untouched.
Not made of steel.

Just human beings carrying things most people will never see.

The uniform may make them look strong —
but it does not erase the heartbeat underneath it. 🚨🖤
