PROJECT: SAFE STOP

NPD is joining forces with the Autism Foundation of Oklahoma to host Project: Safe Stop on June 13 at Sooner Mall.

The educational event gives autistic drivers and passengers a chance to practice safe traffic stops in a controlled environment. Individuals and families also have the opportunity to connect and build relationships with local law enforcement.

The advice in this 1937 graphic still applies today—and it’s just as important now as it was then!

This hand-drawn safety message was created by Oklahoma Highway Patrol Patrolman Carl Johnston, who was assigned to Logan County. It was included in a brochure that was shared with thousands of Oklahomans during a time when traffic safety was becoming a growing concern across the state.

In 1936 alone, a year before the Department of Public Safety was created, Oklahoma saw 685 lives lost and more than 2,000 people injured in traffic collisions. Newspapers at the time described it as “carnage on the highways.” As vehicles became more common and roadways improved, traffic increased—and so did the need for greater public safety awareness. At the same time, many Oklahomans lived in rural areas where local law enforcement coverage was limited.

In response, the state legislature created the Department of Public Safety to help reduce roadway fatalities. When the first troopers hit the road, traffic safety was their priority, and officers like Patrolman Johnston worked hard to share that message with the public.

Nearly 90 years later, that mission continues. While vehicles and roads have changed, the goal remains the same—helping everyone get home safely.

And let's all take a moment to appreciate the incredible detail and care in Patrolman Johnston's handwritten piece of history!
